My friend had posted it in another forum, we couldn't figure out anything. Do point us in the right direction.
Thanks Drusus for the reply. He's kinda sure it's not a temple token. From the buddhist pose, we're guessing its from India, Thailand or Cambodia.
It certainly looks like a temple token but definitely not from India (unless its from south India). Also its make do not resemble to normal Indian tokens. I would say that its a Thai temple token based on the script and temple shape.
Thanks kidromeo for the reply. Ya, India was last on the list. The script part is confusing still, if anyone can recognize it, do mention :-(
My guess is a token from the ancient Cambodian temple at Angkor Thom, near the more famous temple at Angkor Wat. The script seems to be Khmer, and the combination of the distinctive triple domes on the reverse with the elephant on the left side of the obverse, clearly invoke thoughts of the Terrace of the Elephants. If I'm right, the image could either be Vishnu, in whose honor it was originally built, or Buddha, to whom the temple was re-dedicated as that religion spread and to a great extent replaced Hinduism in the area.
Thanks hontonai for the reply. Seems you're on the right path. Tried unsuccesfully to understand that script. Looking for someone from Cambodia now or anyone knowing Khmer.
