As some of you know, I am trying to put together a nice registry set of MS IKEs. Out of all my coins that you will see in my albums, I do not have this set up. I have kinda made a deal with myself that I won't post them until I feel that the set is complete. But as a sneak peak, I wanted to show one of my new stunners that I just received yesterday from Brian Vaile who some of you may know as one of the founders to the IKE group website. I personally hate these pics that I took, as they make marks and dings really stand out that are hard to see otherwise with the coin in hand... but trust me.. the coin is a stunner! So here she is...1971 S/S MS66 Pop13, none finer. Hope you enjoy.
Joe, you know I've just started to collect IKE $s this year. The one you've shown is a nice Peace Vam & if you got it from Brian Vaile then you're right in step with the emerging IKE Group that who are trying to get the IKE coins recognized and listed properly as error designations. There seem to be a number of Ike errors or variations that need to be categorized and "officially" listed in the VAMP listings. I'd love to see a close up shot of the S/S on this date IKE. I'm starting to get an affinity for the Eisenhower dollars.While on vacation, I bought all I found at antique fairs and flea markets. Thats where I picked out a 1935 S Vam 3 for $3 or $4, (I forget the price). Alas, I still have to inspect the 10-12 IKEs I bought. But I see you got yourself a MS 66 coin. I'm still working on the raw ones to see what I can find. I haven't started an album, but now, that seems to be the logical thing to do. You are putting together a Registry set. That's not my mission for now but who knows? Bruce
THanks Bruce. The S/S is a bit tricky to see. I couldn't wait to get this coin in hand, because I had never seen a S/S up close. I have not tried looking at it through my 10x loupe, but the 16x loupe was perfect for this. When looking at the MM, there appears to be a very slight mark of what appears to be the other S at the very top curve of the mintmark. Once you see it, you will never forget it. I do collect raw IKEs and I have found some nice ones, but no registry set type quality IKEs. The real cherrypicks will be the proof ikes if you find any of the DDOs. Need to keep your eye out for all those Brown ikes floating out there. Good luck. :high5:
Yes.... trying. I have all the regular issue ones. This is my first registry list variety one that I now own. I am working on a deal where I am trying to secure a FS401 IKE which is the 1971 S Peg Leg variety. This one is a little more expensive than this last in the grade I want it so I am looking at breaking into the rainy day fund. Even after I purchase what I need to complete the set, I will continue to look for varieties at every show that I go to. Varieties are ripe for the picking. If the IKE group succeeds in getting TPGs to recognize the newer varieties, there should be at least a half dozen or so varieties that are fairly easy to find. The trick is to find them in high grades. The one thing that I have noticed about grading IKEs is that most TPGs are very forgiving when it comes to bag marks or other distractions on the face of the coin. Of course, the less you have the better.

Careful depending on them though. There are some 501's that have had the die markers polished off. kind of tricky one once you see one in hand you will never forget it. Good Hunting Stewart

I know what you mean!!! All of the IKEs will be upgrades. I am upgrading my 71S, 73S and 74S from 67s to 68s. Also acquiring a 73D in MS66 too. Christmas is any day now!!!! :eat:

I have kind of an Ike question, I have put together a fifty year proof set collection along with a fifty year mint set collection. I discovered when collecting my proof sets that in the 1977 & 1978 proofs the Ikes and Kennedies were toning more than any other sets I had. Now that I have the mint sets i am finding the same thing. I wish I could post pictures but sons girlfriend made off with uploading device. Has anyone else seen this??:bigeyes::kewl:

There are so many DDOs with Ike's that getting them now when the market is soft on Ikes is a great idea. Ruben
Hey, when you come across a group of IKES that are mixed grades and years, What is the base price for these non-silver $$s? I've paid $3 and $4 for these when they're sold at flea markets etc. (That's also, how I got my 1938 S Peace $ VAM 3. So, I'm asking, Is 3-4$$$ worth it for any IKE $ in todays market. Well, I'm thinking that, when you buy in quantity, if you try to get them for as little as possible and later you can look them up for all the varieties that you don't know off hand, it can turn out to be profitable. You can always turn them back into circulation, or alt least, find someone else who wants them. On the other hand, there are hoards of many thousands out there (from casinos etc.) that are basically unreached. These hoards, I believe, contain the various wonders of the Eisenhower Dollar series. It only take some adventurous soul to start locating them and looking. Bruce
Hey Bruce, When I buy these in bulk, which when I do, I usually look for the in UNC condition which around here is tough. I try to buy them for no more than $1.50 a piece, but really try to get down around $1.10-1.20. Most times I am successful on negotiating down to that price mainly because nobody is interested in them and dealers want to move them. When it comes to the silver unc onces, $4-5 I find is a decent and common price. For the proof silver anywhere from $5-8 I find is a common price depending on how many you buy. Also, the 73 proof will cost you a bit more, I think somewhere around $15-25 depending on the deal you get. Sometimes more if it is a nice one. The gentleman that I have been dealing with lately makes some pretty decent returns because he knows what he's look for and basically cherrypicks all the varieties... turns them in for grading and resells them. If he finds them for anywhere near the prices I mentioned above or even a bit more, he is still making a ton back on his investment. I hope to be at that point one day, but in the mean time, I am having funning learning to get to that point.
