Can we trust current slab coins?.

Yep with a fine tooth blade (24 tpi) you can cut the edges off and pop the coin out easy pea seay. I agree buy the coin not the slab unless it's a trade dollar or key date you just have to have then buy slabbed. Ice

Generally good advice, but...

I wonder if more money has been lost by collectors buying raw coins that they thought they could grade properly, but ended up overpaying; or by collectors buying PCGS and NGC slabs and trusting the grade on the label without paying much attention to the actual coin in the slab?!?

Let me understand this. You're asking, you have a coin, it's in a TPG slab, and it has a retail book value of $500; what, on average, can you expect to retail it for?

Just as an aside, I once used a circular saw (diamond blade, of course) on a TPG slab to saw-out a Morgan Dollar. Just a word of caution, should any of you ever think of trying that. I ended up with two Morgan Half Dollars. Remember, you want to apply that blade only to the top or bottom of the slab, never to the middle.

thats one asset that is easily divided up if the need arises. Bud, I have tears of laughter. sorry. I recall one instance where I actually considered "cracking " a SEGS holder , a seated dime. The numismatic community was coming down hard on Larry Briggs , and was considering sending it in as a "raw" submission, just to see what it would come back as. Ultimately , I decided against it and sold the coin for a tidy profit , in the SEGS holder.

Couldn't it be that the mint has improved it's quality?

Setting aside that for a moment, your post seems to presume that we trust the TPGs to begin with. I, for one, am not willing to make that assumption.

 

if the mint improve its quality to almost every coin graded ms69 to ms70. why we have to spent money and send them for slab?. beside that. some large dealers have their own judgement. they slab their own. and look at NGC and PCGs. the big gap involved. yes. few years ago. i believed them.

 

I've studied my 2009 Proof Sets very carefully. I'd say that any coin in them would grade PF69UC and many would come back PF70UC. BUT why go through the hastle of submission when I can purchase the coins today at near the cost of the slabbing and postage alone.

 

Outside of a slab, an MS70 coin may not stay that way for long...and who has more trustworthy slabs than PCGS and NGC...they're not perfect, but who's better than them?

 

as for most collectors. we are better than them. only those newcomers will try to submit.

 

I've never submitted anything to any of the TPGs. I've contacted both PCGS and NGC a few times with questions, but I never receive answers that make me comfortable with the process.

With that said, if I'm buying MS65-MS67 FBL Franklins on eBay, I won't buy anything other than PCGS or NGC...but that's just me.
