I have just spent a very pleasant hour or so perusing (what an awful, snobbish word) the online Goldberg catalogue of the Dan Holmes sale, and specially the 1793-1804 dates. You have not exxagerated one bit 900! I have never seen anything like that! frankly amazing. An S-266C in MS 65!??! S-103 in superb grade...Just too many to recount, not to speak of the NC's and the Strawberry wreaths. Incredible conditions. A beauty to behold, all. I felt very humble. I was wondering all along who on earth has the financial means to buy coins like that? I guess they are the so-called whales, captains of industry? Very few if any of us common folk. I also wonder what is the 'Dan Holmes' premium eager buyers were forced to pay to possess some of his better coins? In a way it is a pity to see a collection like this dispersed. But that is what inevitably always happens with most great collections. (I also had a fun time comparing some of my humble belongings to the Holmes coins of the same variety: there are not enough points on the Sheldon scale to accurately describe the difference. But hey, on one or two I actually came close). Only one word to describe this sale: incredible
I strongly encourage you to contact the Goldbergs and get a copy of the auction catalog. Very educational. Great reference work.
