That 1944 10 centavos piece is just like the one I found on the floor of a house we were moving into when I was 4 years old. It's the first coin I remember owning!

I really like your one centavo. Here is the only one centavo piece I have. I can't complain, because I found it in a grab bag of foreign coins I bought last year.

Here's my only U.S.-Philippines coin so far... I want to get the rest of the 1909 set, in mint state if possible. Especially the centavo. Though many disagree, I treat these as U.S. coins and not foreign coins. The coins say United States of America on them, the Philippines were a U.S. Territory at the time of mintage and the coins (at least all of the early ones) were minted in either San Francisco or Philadelphia... sounds like a U.S. coin to me :) Anyone know where I can get a high grade 1909-S centavo, preferably certified???

    Anyways, here's my Peso:

WOW MIKE! That is a stunner. I agree.....I treat these as US coins. I can't see any rubs or wear on that coin for it to receive a 58, but maybe in hand it looks different. I will keep an eye out for you now that I know you are looking.

Why shop eBay when you could try to win one in one of Joe's contests, if he offers them again in the future. I won the 10c pictured in post #40 of this thread.

Sorry gang, they are all gone. Krispy (Chris) got the last of the US/Philippine issue coins. :D I actually sold the 3 unc ones on the WINS auction. I still have 2 Philippine coins but both are post WWII transfer of the islands. I wouldn't mind owning the one Illini has or one like it. One day I will find one for my type set.

In 1857, Queen Isabella II issued a degree, ordering the founding of the Casa de Moneda de Manila in the Philippines with the sole purpose of coining gold. It was established in 1861. Issues here ran from 1861 to 1868 in the denominations of 1, 2, and 4 pesos (rare years are 1867 and 1866). These are the very first coins that ever bore the name of the colony: FILIPINAS. In 1864 the operations of the mint were expanded to cover silver. All silver coins with the exception of the 1897 Un Peso were struck here (the latter was struck at the Madrid mint).

wow, great coins you got there.

here is a sample of one of my collections, a 4 Pesos Isabella II gold coin minted for the Philippines during Spanish times. This one has a planchet or stripping error on the hair..
