    Wish I would have!
Now I'm on the hunt to pay a big premium on a $5 buffalo....
I thought everybody was a fool for even paying $164 for those $5 buffalos... Look who is the fool now!
OUCH! I should have bought two, when I had the chance...
Buying directly from the mint (hoping they will ship!) is one of the best things to do...
You never know when they will hit ya' with a low mintage.. (2008 buffalos) and the $10 2008 AGE had a mintage of 9,200, I believe that is the lowest by any gold bullion coin, released by the US mint, ever...

That seems like an awfully small profit margin for the dealer. How can that possibly be worth his time and effort?

Let's take your example with the 2009 Proof set which is $30. If he ordered 100, that's be $3005 (with postage). If he sold 98 of them at $31, that'd be $3038, a grand total of $33 profit . . . but how much time and effort went into selling 98 sets?

No, I know what you mean. I just thought you were coming on a bit strong :) I understand your point though. I agree that people are often over critical of dealers. These guys are trying to make a living, and they're busy. Stuff happens.

I have always believed in ordering right from the mint on mint items

I bought a 2008 1/10 oz UNC 24K buffalo gold coin from the mint (straight from the mint) for $135-$140 and now it's worth 2.5x that on ebay! I really made it out well

Well I guess my honest opinion after reading this is if you are not satisfied WHY do people keep going back or keep dealing with this person. Some people are their own worse enemy. GO somewhere else. AND if you are worried about being scammed then do your research on the coin before you buy for gosh sakes there is enough resource out there. If you feel you are getting scammed speak up or walk away. I have known alot of dealers most good ( honest guys trying to feed the family) some bad. I deal with the good and never go back to the bad.. IMHO lol Jerry

Actually I did intend to come on strong. I wanted to make a point. I hope I did.

It's just it gets annoying. Although I do agree that if your wanting 09 coinage it's best to attempt to get it through the mint if you can as dealers can't even seem to get them.

i am still heavily buying directly from the mint. i love new coins, new boxes, new sleeves, new c.o.a. in short. everything should be new.

Good for you. Used to buy from the US Mint too, until last year. But this year three orders I placed were later canceled by the mint, without ever providing any reason. Finally I called, and was told that I cannot have a billing address in DE and a shipping address in the US.

And again, no explanation whatsoever why this has worked just fine for several years until 2008, and is now not possible any more. Oh well. So much for ordering from them. If it still works for you USAnians, enjoy it. ;)

    Lincoln sets

Ordered some of the Lincoln sets. I was suprised that there was a limit of five per household. Looks like the first of December for now. Nov 30th to be exact. Copper is 2.89 up .09 this morning 8 A.M. PST.

the limit was 5 per family. that is why i predict the set mintage will be around 100,000 set. cause year end is very near. the mint will declare sell out.

I buy from the mint whnever possible. Reasons: service, price and I know where the coin came from

I'm pretty biased here. Being a dealer on the secondary market.

I would suspect that the number of sets that have gone down in value in the last 40 years as compared to the original US mint purchase price is 80-90%.

I hear some comments about having to buy some coins such as the gold buffalos at a premium... but I haven't heard anyone mention the sets that you can buy easily at half of their original US mint purchase price. A good example is the 2000 proof set. Greysheet bid is a whopping $8.00

So for every 2000 proof set you ordered from the mint you lost over half of what you paid for it.

Why not buy it on the secondary market??

It's cheaper, in some cases as much as half as much.

I'm not much of a gambler but if you told me I had an 80-90% chance of losing half my investment each time... I don't think I would be a player.

Just some thoughts from the other side.

simple reason is that the set is a second hand. period. a new car. when it is use. the price of that car is count as a used car. just like an unc coin. if you touch it. it is consider not unc.

I buy new sets still sealed in their shipping boxes from the mint on a regular basis from people who ordered them and never opened them.

Aren't the ones in a collection the same thing?? As soon as you opened the box they become exactly the same thing I'm talking about buying and selling. Unless of course one doesn't ever bother to open the boxes from the mint and even then we still buy them for the same price. So I guess it's in the eye of the beholder.

Ummm just because you touched the coin doesn't mean it's no longer Unc. It only becomes About Uncirculated if it has wear on it.

About Unc is not unc. The coin can't be both.
