My grandfather gave me a big bag of coins for my B-Day and this is by far my favorite one.. I'm guessing the condition is anywhere from ef30-40. I'm not really good at grading older coins. I'm just wondering what this coin could be worth...too bad there's a hole through the date...thanks for everyone that helps me out.

The coin looks VF, in terms of detail. VF grades range from 20 to 35. While XF grades are 40 and 45.

so deduct for the um "damage" and you have a $8.00 coin perhaps. Holed coins, unless they are extremely scarce, rarely bring anything close to the otherwise grade price. Nice keepsake though! The hole in the coin, at one point was quite common practice.

I would say upper VF details, but not XF. I'd go with VF-30.

I would say VF30 details - for the hole and the rim nicks. Certainly worth more than $8 dollars, but probably not to a dealer. I would expect some place between $30 and $50 on ebay. I can't see it good enough to attribute it.

Here 's a 1836 Bust half with overlapping edge motto or design (WE) lll-0l

overlapping edge letters or design are defined as : A platchet which was rolled or turned to receive impressions between a pair of edge dies that were out of adjustment or had slippage in the drive . This 1836 reads if the pictures are not big enough "Fiffty cents Haor lfa do llar" very cool error bust half.

7 or 8 dollars, too bad about the hole, just an ag would be at least 40.

Back in the early to late 1800's, holes were drilled into the coins for a coin necklace. They did that alot back then. Don't now why. I'm guessing from $40-70 Dollars, but to me its worth more than that.

True. However you won't be finding many of them that will pay you $40.00 for it either unless, it is an extremely Scarce Date.

You're right there a hole sure pulls the coins value down more than just about anything .rzage:D

Luckily there are folks that collect holed coins. Granted that does not help the value but you might find it a good home if you were looking to sell someday.

I hate holed coins! But I think I'll just pass it along to my daughter in a couple years or so. She not even 2 and likes to help me go through coins! Start them early I say.
