I was reading an older version of Photograde and it suggested coating coins with clear nail polish to keep them from getting scratched. Surely nobody does this anymore.

Yup, they do. And some use shellac, lacquer, acrylics and even lucite. Of course it was far more prevalent years ago, but there are still those who do it.

As there are coins, there will be somebody coating them with something in the name of protection or preservation. In today's world, various types of oils are more commonly used. And just like in the day when experts recommended nail polish and lacquer, there are experts today who recommend oils.

Of course there are plenty of other experts who say that using oils is crazy, and harmful to coins. Just like there was when nail polish was recommended.

Care to guess who will win out in the end ? The same guys who won out before ;)

At least nail polish can be easily removed without otherwise affecting the coin by a quick rinse in pure acetone.

Be carefull with that one. Due to womens requirements of super, duper nail polishes, some are as strong as steel I think. Possibly could be used on the space shuttles for the outer layers.;) These are usually not the clear ones but you never know. I think it has something to do with when they scratch a guy, they don't want to leave evidence. :D
