This is one of those 19th century Talers that are hard to find in AU-UNC quality. I could never figure our why. Well done Regandon!
Thanks. I've looked for a mint state one, and man they bring a good high premium. So when I seen this one in AU with the strike it has, I went for it.
That is a nice Taler Regandon! great condition. I myself have been looking for one of these for quite a while: http://www.coinarchives.com/w/lotviewer.php?LotID=691258&AucID=503&Lot=1436 The variety with the lergend shortened to K. V. PREUSSEN instead of KOENIG VON PREUSSEN. It is said the king was not amused by this.
Thanks for tell me about the variety, as I never knew about it. Thats why I love this forum. Even though I've been building this set of mine for the last 30yrs, I'm still learning. I have the members here to thank. They have been so very helpful, and not afraid to share their knowledge. Even though I'm an historian of 30yrs, I do not know it all, and I will admit it.
It is AU-55, but looks better than that. I've looked for higher graded ones, but there hard to find in mint state. I got it at a very good price though.
Does the grade depend on the scarcity of high end coins like in the case of US coins? Otherwise, my beginner self would call this one an XF (but I still love it, btw!!).
I really do not know Luis. But this coin is AU, and it may be the ajustment marks (File marks) you see that are normal on a lot of Talers, that may lead you to think its an XF. The mint would use a file to remove some of the silver to make the coin weigh what its suppose to.
Wow, that's very interesting. I wouldn't have guessed it, because I thought the minting process was already more accurate than it actually was back in those days.
Thanks for sharing the great coin. I especially like the reverse. I would display it with the reverse facing forward. Very best regards, collect89
