Contaminated Dellars and my Whacked S VDB Part 2

I am sorry that I didn't see the two Threads before and am just now chiming in! Telling you not to crack the coin out of the PCGS holder is a mute point, since you had already done so. If you were only trying to remove some dirt and debris stuck in and around the Lettering and possibly remove some of the Dellars Darkener, then I would have recommended the following: Soak the coin in Virgin Olive Oil for several days or more, remove and clean the dirt out that is in and around the Lettering with a very sharp and green Rose Thorn. A green Rose Thorn will not damage or scratch the surface of the coin unless you bear down significantly and with only gentle pressure on the Thorn while running it in and around the Lettering, should have removed most if not all of the dirt and debris. I usually cut three, four or five Rose Thorns before starting as the sharp points tend to wear out or bend fairly quickly. The Olive Oil would also more than likely smoothed out the look of the Dellars Darkener to a more pleasing color, if it had been used! Once the cleaning is finished, a light rinse in water and pat dry would have sufficed but if you want to get the Oily sheen off, then a mild mixture of water and dishwashing liquid before the rinse, should have done the trick.

Thanks guys- Frank- I actually did everything you said exactly, except mostly used mineral oil, and any rinsing was with acetone and then DW. I hurt the coin when I soaked it x about 2 days in acetone and this removed the old oils and showed hidden hairlines. The next mistake occurred with the contaminated dellars (not mixed the way Jim described). I didn't know you should mix dellars this way and had used undiluted many times on lower value coins without problems. This new Dellars I bought was coagulated (I inspected it after one new spot broke out). I soaked in acetone to (the main and big mistake here) removed verdigris. This showed the hairlines. The verdigris (3 spots on the rev) and the one new spot were removed via Verdigone and NCS. However, the coagulated Dellars also caused the grey toning. I sent to NCS to get this removed. I post all this for others benefit so they will learn, at risk to my own reputation. I figure if I can help others by my mistakes they will learn. Others can feel free to refernces these posts to those trying to clean high value coins with limited knowledge. Spocks idea is risky for me. I will sell on eBay or keep. I have lost so much money on coins due to mistakes (thousands) I can't afford any more losses. Wouldn't suprise me if I got more than $1,100 for this coin on eBay.

honestly, I don't think it looks all that bad, if you left it in the holder I bet you'd get a decent price on eBAy on a weekend auction.

 

Here is a follow up for all the naysayers. Cracked out and soaking x 2 months in mineral oil. Followed the advice of some people I respect. The black toning is calming down. The shimmery looks is that I didn't get all the oil off. I am very happy with the results. Now it's goning back in the oil. I check every week. Call me crazy. I really don't care. It's the end of the world as we know it. I think that's a song??

Yes, if I were you I would leave the coin in the holder and just keep it around. It doesn't look all that bad. Heck, I had an old Merc dime that was all blackened (not by me) and it bugged me to no end. Anyways, I slapped that pup in some Tarnx and that was all she wrote. That dime shribbled up and wanted to fall off the earth, it looks pathetic, but nobody knows but the forum and me and I'm just waiting to get rid of it somewhere just haven't figured that part out yet.
Don't sweat it, we all learn lessons with this hobby, I call it part of a (growing experience).

 

Fretboard- coin is out of the holder. Cracked out and soaked x several months in mineral oil to remove the dark toning from coagulated dellars. This is a lengthy old thread, but good reading for the learning experience. I was demonstrating how I felt that oil may break up the dark toning given enough time.

 

To me the coin looks like it was messed with and I don't feel that can be fixed.
