Just bought my first Peace Dollar. I like it but have no experience grading them and would be grateful for any opinions anyone would care to give.

The pictures are the sellers (I'm still working on doing my own photos) and they really show all the "warts" on the coin.

I would say it is a 60, but I do not know all the different die states, it does seem to have a lot of marks, but still good details, it does not look worn to me

I don't see much luster in the photos and there appear to be quite a bit of contact marks. I can't quite tell from the photos if the high points have any rub but I'm guessing they do based on what I see.

This is a complete guess and to be taken with a grain of salt but I'll say AU58.

yeah it's definitely circulated from those pictures, maybe even lightly cleaned.

I agree, it looks like there are some hairlines on the obverse from a past cleaning.

Curiously, why did you buy it?

Why did I buy it? Cause it was there?? How about 2 coins ship as cheaply as one and I'd already won a Morgan, and I haven't yet bought a Peace Dollar, and I figured that for $25 I couldn't go too far wrong. I thought it looked pretty good except for the large ding in the neck and the one on the chin. Thought I could buy it for $25 because of those two dings.

Hairlines? I haven't seen any. (where do you see them?) And there is luster though it's not going to be blinding anyone. :) What I find a bit confusing is that some of the hair on the obverse looks rubbed but the feathers on the eagle of the reverse look untouched. Soft strike?

That date comes softly struck. Yours look like a "baggy"/lightly cleaned AU, in terms of detail. And at $25, you did fine. But do you like it, and if not, why buy it just because it was there and priced right?

See the fine horizontal scratches that run across the obverse of the coin? Those are usually indicative of a previous cleaning.

Yes, I like it - warts and all. :) I can't afford "MS 70"s but still find satisfaction in lesser grades. I've even bought a few G/VG coins just so I can handle them without caution or guilt. I'm looking forward to acquiring more

I couldn't agree more. I am having more enjoyment with the lesser grade coins and handling them than one encased in plastic. Gotta get me hands on some silver!!!!:thumb:

Don't think anyone can afford MS-70 non exist. I'm currently looking at try to get one in 63. The prices are off from their last year high. I agree coin is AU but IMO visually its less than that. It has too many hits for me. One thing is you got it for a good price and it is a better date.

HArd to tell on wear in the shots.... the amount of luster kinda moves me to and AU as well. The peace dollars are just hard to grade though, the strike on them isn't the best in the world so you wind up with that whole strike vs. wear thing. had the same problem of MS/AU on a 1926 P that I used to own, there's a thread around here somewhere on it, these just aren't easy coins to grade from a pic...
