These notes were printed by the V-mail unit that accompanied US forces onto Okinawa. There was a shortage of US currency because of the combat conditions and re-supply problems. They were printed as a stopgap until the pay ships could arrive. Seven $1.00 notes are known to exist (including this one). Fifty cent and $5.00 notes were also printed but none are known. The back is blank except for a stamped serial number.

I served the U.S.M.C. at Camp Schwab, Okinawa just outside of Henoko Village in the early 70's before deployment to DaNang.

I am sure those were before my time....but oh the memories of Jungle Survival School...LOL

    Very cool Lettow... :thumb: :thumb:

It is a victim of supply and demand, most notably demand.

I paid about $70.00 for mine at the auction at MPCFest.

I'm guessing most were turned in when the real dough showed up.

That is really cool, I wonder how many are sitting in lockboxes in someone's home. I bet a few more survived.

Well, the value of the note is equal to the 50,000 Americans who died on Okinawa. Priceless...Should donate to West Point. Traci
