Has Clembo gone mad? Nope - been that way for years actually. Just checking some population reports on 2009 Ultra High Reliefs. Maybe I'll get edited for this and maybe not. Here goes according to NGC population reports as of 08/27/09. In mint state coins we have: MS62 (1), MS66 (1), MS67 (5)' MS 68 (5), MS69 (1683) and MS70 (2134) In mint state Proof Like we have: MS69PL (147), MS70PL (210) In mint state Early Release we have: MS68 (5), MS69 (400), MS70 (593) In mint state Early Release Proof Like we have: MS69PL (11) and MS70PL (7) Now let's struggle with the numbers here. BY FAR the rarest grades are the MS62 and MS66. Then we have the MS67 and MS68 along with the MS68 Early Release. Then we have the MS70PL (finally a 70) and it's an early release because it made it to NGC in time. Overall numbers show that the MS70 (except in early release PL) is the most COMMON grade found. This is in no way a slam on NGC. I respect them as one of the best in the grading field. What I AM pointing out is just how many people buy the number on the plastic and pay, well, stupid money for it. How twisted is this? Want a rarity? Chase down the MS62 or MS66 coin. Currently they are unique examples. One thing these coins all have in common is that they contain an ounce of gold. That's what they're really worth.
I'm thinking he dropped it several times. stepped on it then gave it to his kid for show and tell! If it came from the mint like that I would be EXTREMELY disappointed. I've seen about 20 roll though the shop now and none lower than an MS69. We're now on our third MS70PL and the "value" is sinking FAST.
