1994 or 1990

I found this, and wonder if it was supposed to be a 1990. In one way it looks like a 94 and then it looks like a 90. Under the D to the right is part of a letter, can't make it out though. I am intrigued by this one. Thanks for any help.

From all of your photos it just looks like a damaged "4". I don't see a "0" in the photos.

 

Looks like a zinc rot 1994.

 

I agree, the rot is distorting whatever the number is so whether a '90 or '94, it doesn't matter.

This is not zinc rot the image looks raised unfortunitly the pics don't help much I do believe better pics are needed to make a positive evaluation on your coin.Looks more like a possible interior die break on the MM maybe.

Well, thanks for not lettingme throw this one in the zinc rot pile, after trying much harder to get better shots, and for some reason, my zoom started working again,...it never has, so I got this great shot...what is under the D, is another 4..so, it is a 1994-4...lol I guess. take a look it is pretty cool...and thanks again!:thumb:

Strange, in your original post I thought you were talking about the "4" in "1994".

I thought a 4/4 would be in the date. Wouldn't this be a D/4? I have never seen a mint mark over a number but that's what your photo suggests.

 

I was originally talking about the 4 in 1994, but the mintmark had something under it that I couldn't see, so I tried harder to get better shots...and really did on this one.

 

I just did a search for mint mark varieties on coppercoins.com for this date and did not see anything, there is one reported DDO and that's about it.

If no one else here chimes in maybe you should contact CONECA (The combined organization of numismatic error collectors of america), if they confirm it they will add it to the official variety list. They can also de-confirm i.e. say that it was caused by some other means.

Sending it to CONECA might be the best way to go. By examining it in hand they can give you a better evaluation and the cost is not nearly as much as the TPG's. My personal feeling is they will confirm that it is damage as was suggested in the beginining of this post. If you do send it in please post the results.

At this point I think we are waiting to see what CONECA says about the photos.

In my opinion, you should save your money and send this junker back to the bank! This is clearly a zinc/environmental damaged coin. There are no 4/MM errors and this coin has build-up around the MM because of the damage.:kewl:

 

That looks like a definite Mint Error coin to me.
