What would a "true" Crusaders coin be? A lot of people put anything made in that time period and mark it as a crusaders coin. I am looking for something (that wont be a mortgage) that has signifance with the crusaders..any ideas? stainless
Are you looking for one really nice coin, or would you want something reasonably inexpensive that has some historical significance? For the latter, you might want some trachys from the Latin occupation of Constantinople that resulted from the third crusade. They're very affordable, but they tended to be rather crude and poorly struck. You could also get some trachys of the immediatley preceeding Byzantine emperors like Alexius III.
I am looking for the latter, although I would prefer the coin to not be just a slug. I'll probably spend $30 or under. I am in no hurry to get one, this is kind of one of my MSNS show prep things, that way I have a list to go out for. stainless
You might want a Latin trachy, then. They're generally not pretty, but you should be able to find something better than a slug. This seems to be the best looking one (imho) under $30 on VCoins right now, and here's one that looks about average for them in general, so that should give you an idea of what you can get of this type.
A Crusader Coin would be any coin struck under the auspices of one of the Western European kingdoms set up in the Near East and Greece during the crusades. Particularly, any of the Crusader States. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crusader_states (But I personally wouldn't include the Cilician Armenian kingdom, they were there for different reasons) Funny you should ask, seeing that one of the two I have came from you! Look up the coins of Bohemond III, those are, IMO, the coolest coins minted in the crusader kingdoms. I have one but havent photographed it yet. I have developed a real appreciation for these rough coins...I even made a crusader font...To do this I had to study the inscriptions of many different coins to get a full alphabet...by doing that I can now read these coins which I found almost impossible to do before.
Yes, but that is not what I want...I don't want a coin that is called a Crusaders coin, just because it was minted during the crusades, I want a coin the signifies it. Kind of like Constantine the Great commemoratives, commemorating his city. stainless
Crusader coins is a broad swath of coins minted by crusader kingdoms...like the Bohemond III coin, he was the latin prince of Antioch. Most of what we consider crusader coins are coins minted by what we now call latin rulers of areas of the so called holy land. This is a coin of Bohemond...just one of the many latin rulers of the holy land and it can be truely considered a 'crusader' coin. any coin minted by a crusader kingdom or even the latin rulers of Constantinople (crusaders sacked and took the city they were there to save) would be what we would deem 'crusader'...also, this coin here. The coins above ARE crusader kings of Greek (ducal)states of Greece, Cyprus and Constantinople. They are true crusader coins, not just coin that happen to be minted at the time. Europe had a lot of coins being minted at this time, they are not all crusader. Then you have the coins like this one: Struck in the name of Conrad I/III HRE by the Republic of Genoa...although not a crusader coin...it was a common coin type used by crusaders...like the euro of its day But IMO, the real crusader coins are those struck by the outremer (crusader states like the one I posted at the top)
So you're looking for a siege piece or a commemorative? You're not really going to find any commemoratives of the era, it just wasn't a custom at the time. You can maybe find some siege pieces, I'll check my crusader book.
Well, I have a couple of crusader coins. One from Sicily (small one) That was during the time of "The night of the Vesspas). The other is an Armenian Crusaders from Anitolia (Turkey). hya:
Here are a couple of crusader coins from my collection. The first two are silver Gigliato coins for the island of RHODES by the Knights of St. John. The first was issued under Grandmaster: Juan Fernandez de Heredia (1376-1396 AD), the second was issued under Grandmaster: Philabert de Naillac (1396-1421 AD). The third specimen is a billon Denier from the DESPOTATE OF EPIRUS under Frankish rule. This was issued under Despot: Philip de Taranto. RHODES~AR Gigliato 1376-1396 AD RHODES~AR Gigliato 1376-1396 AD EPIRUS (DESPOTATE)~Billon Denier 1294-1313 AD
2 crusader coins Here are my two. 1. A ducat from Robert d'Anjou (aka Robert de Taranto) king of Achaia 2. A bronze follis from Tancred, Regent of Antioch
The crusader coins bears the origin: Byzantine, whom ruled with several rulers and on many different and spread locations, south europe and down to the middle east. 93 rulers in all and therefore atleast equal many prints of coins on rulers but more ofc. years 306-1448. I myselfe seek perticular Byzantian coins out, from 1000-1100 tops.
The Crusaders did capture and occupy Constantinople for a number of years, but the coinage and history of the Byzantine (Romaion) Empire is distinctly separate.
