Crusty, Did you read the bottom of the OP? Well, it is Monday night and here comes the answer. Some of you were right on and others were not. The coin has a soft strike which is common on this issue and is also commonly mistaken for high point wear. Once you see the coin in hand, it becomes much more evident that the coin is mint state. Now for the grade! The luster on the reverse of this coin is absolutely booming and the overall eye appeal is fantastic as long as you are not a strike conscious collector.
I know I'm a new guy but I've been trained by the folks on this site. It's a small thrill to have gotten it right. What a hoot! Beautiful coin.
I am happy to see that for once I actually guessed a grade correctly. Even a blind squirrel finds an acorn every now and then and all that. It is a beautiful coin, as I said much nicer looking than my PCGS 66, which has minimal toning but a slightly better obverse strike, particularly at Liberty's right (facing) hand. I know you collect a lot of NGC coins (I don't) and I wouldn't have been surprised if this had a star. I suspect this would not cross because of the strike based on my experiences trying to cross NGC Walkers to PCGS in higher grades. Regardless, a beauty and enjoyed the photos and the exercise.
For over a year I have wanted to collect a nice short set of walkers. On this particular coin I guess it showed some signs of wear and cast my vote for an AU coin. Shows how little I know about this series and why I have not purchased anything but some melt walker over the last year. It has been difficult for me differentiate between a weak strike from a minor circulated coin. Living where I do, it is very difficult and expensive to visit a coin shop. Post such as this shows me how much I need to learn before I spend some semi serious bucks. Thanks
and that's why when i bought my first and only walker (MS-67), I made sure it was a PCGS graded CAC stickered coin. Until I really know how to grade, that's what I'll be looking for.
Had I seen the Heritage photos before opening up my big keyboard, I would have voted MS65- the high point condition is rendered more clearly on those images, imo. Also, because it is one of Lehigh's coins, I should have known it was AT LEAST MS65!
Congrats Leigh you fooled 83% of us. It was awfully tough for me, but i am on the losing end anyway. Thanks for the contest. Traci
I agree. I could be wrong, but I also think its an unc coin with a weak strike. However, I wouldn't be suprised if NGC graded it higher than MS63. I'm thinking 64.
