Say I had a worn Peace dollar that grandad carried with him at Normandy or something similar. Basically a reference that has no numismatic value but would enrich a family heirloom. Would either of the TPG’s allow such a reference on their label?

Don't know, i Don't think unless if the person is really special and well know like a coin from the president for example.

You could self slab it and design your own label, or have it TPG'd and still enhance it by putting the slab in an envelope with a description of it's history, so future generations can distinguish it from any other slabbed coin.

Would a TPG be willing to include the provenance on the insert without proof?

I doubt it. I have a few coins that came from family that future generations will never know. And that is sort of what I was wondering. If the “vanity label” has nothing to do with any numismatic value or provenance, would they include it for future family generations sake?

If you're willing to spend enough and have enough coins you might possibly be able to get something like The Randy Family Collection. You're never going to be able to get "carried at Normandy" as that would be a huge value adder

I think so but you would have to have physical proof of your claim. May be best to slab and label it yourself.

I read through the "Pedigree" excerpt provided by Jason, and it seems a bit vague about what can or can't be acceptable. Additionally, it states that if NGC declines to include the provenance, the fees are non-refundable.

I would suggest that you call NGC Customer Service. Ask them if "Carried in the Normandy Invasion" would be acceptable.

Just call NGC / PCGS / ANACS, one of them might do it for you. I have a seated dollar that has a name on the slab and I can't find any reference to the person. I watch a lot of major auctions and have never come across the name anywhere. Just to let you the coin I have came from a major dealer. If they won't do it for you you can buy your own slab and do it your self. Do it your self it's going to be the cheapest way to d it.

I vote for making your own. Then you can design it anyway you want. And even put a V75 privy mark on the label! LOL. Abercrombie Peace Dollar 1 copy.jpg

  19. I like the self-slab idea too. Agreed, then you can say whatever you want. Probably more appropriate to use a Normandy invasion image than the Iwo Jima image. TC

I'm embarrased to admit I didn't quite know the difference when I just used a WWII image. Oooops! Hahaha. Google time for me!
