I was just wondering if Original Bank Wrapped rolls were worth collecting? Or are they just face value waiting to be spent on something better? Just curious Thanks Kent
Hmmm. Not too much information so far! For older rolls, the big trick is determining that they are actually OBW - not easy to do and there have been threads on that subject before. The ones that are "collectible" are the dates/mintmarks that may contain errors or dates/mintmarks that are worth a lot in high MS grades. So, it's a combination lottery/treasure hunt. On interesting development is the collecting of rolls. Many, many people collect rolls of the coins from recent years. Now whether the entity of a "roll" will maintain its facination or value over the years is yet to be seen. I dabble in Stamp collecting and collecting plate blocks (4 stamps) was very popular when I first got started (60's and 70's). Not really popular anymore. For recent coins, you may want to keep rolls for a couple years and determine whether there's anything "special" about a particular year or mint mark. If nothing shows up after a few years, I'd ditch them. Each roll doesn't take up that much space, but it adds up and besides, who needs a whole lot of nothing?
If you get them from the bank they will always be worth what you paid for them which can't be said for many numismatic items. Some state quarters have jumped up in price, also some 2009 Lincolns have jumped up in price.
If you're talking about current rolls, I'd say collect some. The mintages are low for the nickels and dimes and the cents are a collecting phenomenon in their own right. Plus there's obviously something going on with the Mint-->Fed -->Consumer link for them. Maybe part of this stockpile thing the Mint has been pushing. I'd be reluctant to pay a premium for these rolls but coming from the bank, I'd put aside $100 of each denomination from each Mint.
