Not Paper Money, but I really want to complete my Barber Halves Set. This set is really hard. I just added the 1892 yesterday. But a few other key dates I need (1915,1914,1892 o)
Not to sound like I disagree, but your situation is exactly why I have changed how I collect coins. I used to get the commons, then got stuck when it came to get the key coins. Now, when I decide to start a collection, I get the key/lowest mintage coins as soon as I can. The first Barber half I bought was the 1914. In fact, I created a few webpages that list coins by mintage for each series. I attempt to start at the top and work my way down. http://www.teamsaber.com/john/coins/barberhalf.html I started with the 1914, then worked down as best I could. Sometimes I couldn't find one but the one below it, so I bought that. For example, I don't have the 92-O, but do have the next few beneath it. Besides, I've found that the lowest-mintage coins often increase in value the fastest. John
i buy what i enjoy looking at. Those notes, to start with to be look very nice. That is why i collect, i don't do it for future gains in income. Simply done for me to pass down to my grandchildern as mine started with my grandfather handing it down tome.
Not to go broke buying paper money! Sssh. :secret: Don't tell The Noost, but I really like $2 FRNs -- Especially First Day Issue (FDIs) with a postmarked stamp. I already collected a full district set of First Day Issues with the 13-Star Flag Over Independence Hall stamp (Scott# 1622). I'm now trying to build full district sets with the Americana Issue - Eagle and Shield stamp (Scott# 1596), and the Americana Issue - Liberty Bell stamp (Scott# 1595). Let me tell you, it is incredibly difficult to build these sets! I already collected FDIs for all 50 State Flag stamps, and I'm very close to completing my second set. I have a 1896 $1 Silver Certificate "Educational Series", and I sure would like to have a complete set by adding the $2 and the $5 -- I think these are the most beautifully engraved notes ever for US paper money!
My point exactly schwable.... My collection is for my son AJ. As I learn about a note I pull it out and sit it in front of him explaining all the details to him. If you plan to pass them down then learn about them so you can share the learning experience with them as well. Beauty and Artistry are but a few of the qualties of a Banknote. There is a reason why someones vignette is there both front and back. Security engraving is some fo the finest Art on the Planet....knowledge is Power my friend! Regards, RickieB
Before i buy, i try to get more info. I find them interesting, once my daughter gets old enough she will see them. i try to sit her down on my lap, but she just wants to get into trouble. She's only elven months old. I hope she will enjoy it as much as i do.
I too like the information on banknotes beyond their asthetic qualities. I've researched many of my world banknotes and have written 52 articles on different notes. I've been trying to get them published, seperately or together, but so far I've only had one rejection slip and one bite; The bite isn't worth the trouble. All other publishers - both book and magazines - have completely ignored my queries. It's quite frustrating. But I suppose much of my 2010 will be more research and writing and looking for a publisher. If no publisher is found by the end of 2010, then I will just can the whole project and keep them with my personal collection. Other than that, I'd like to finish my US $1 and $5 type sets, concentrating on the R and S Experimentals and $1 red seals. But those African notes have such an allure ... they keep getting in the way.
I think my goal for 2010 will be to collect high resolution photos of Large Notes. Can't really afford the real ones but I might as wall start an archive of them to study. Now I just have to find a source to borrow a few to photograph.
That John, is a rule to live by...even in Paper Money. The only thing about Paper Money is there may be several "Keys" in a Series which will break the Bank in short order...LOL When it comes to keys, coins and Paper are so much alike!! Perhaps one day I may post my collection again on my own site. Regards, RickieB
Well I have over 30 Large Size Notes and I have no problem letting you use the Images....as long as you mention where they came from. In 2010, I am looking to add only 2 additional notes. Both are Large Size and both are Silver Certs....any guesses?? Let me know... RickieB
hopefully i can be only a few choice notes away from finishing my chicago collection $1's,$2's,$5's,$10's and $20's
