Here is another newp and upgrade for my type set. It resides in a problem free ANACS slab. I really liked the color, luster and hammered strike on this coin. Opinions?
She's a beat allright , color looks great , I'm looking for a nice seated half for my type set right now Hopefully for around a grand , what do you think my chances are . rzage
Thanks! For the price range you are talking about, you could get a stunner! What grade range are you looking for? You should be able to find a nice certified MS example for less than a grand.
Ya I picked that up too. That always makes them that much more fun to place in the type set IMO. Nice coin. I'd love to have it in my type set. Good luster and color.
Is a die clash when the two dies accidently hit and transfer some of the obverse design to the reverse or vica versa |? rzage
I believe you are correct rzage. thanks for the comments! ANACS gave this an AU-58 problem free by the way....bought for $227.00.
I think it looks more MS than AU , one of those mythically graded AU-63 . I would buy that coin in a heartbeat , great find Johnny . rzage
Nice coin. I wonder if the '57 halves had a large date and small date like the large cents of this date -- because the punch used on this coin reminds me of the large date large cent.
Ok, so I received my AU-58 seated half in the mail. Very pleased overall as the coin has nearly full luster, great details and pleasing toning. It does have quite a few circulation hairlines; but it is very nice overall. A few interesting things going on on the reverse. First off, there is what appears to be a very strong die clash right below the eagle's right wing, as pointed out by some of our astute members. Then, around the same area, there are little bits of raised metal kind of circling the outline of the eagle. These areas are not corrosion, or pits from PVC damage as the metal is raised on the surface. Also these areas are fully lustrous. My first thought is that it was struck from a rusting die? Or maybe there was some wandering metal flow? It's quite interesting, and doesn't detract from the look imo. Opinions?
I still think it's a great buy , the die clash and other things yo describe are just gravy , very nice type coin . BTW pretty good pics , is the coin in hand the color your pics show or more to the sellers pics . rzage
The photos posted are excellent. Looking at the reverse, I see what looks like a small raised border of metal around some of the letters and devices. When I see that, I have to at least entertain the idea of some surface manipulation, such as whizzing. I can see what appear to be some short, parallel lines in the field near the eagles' left wing, at the top- my right. can you tell if the luster in the fields looks like radial flow lines under magnification? Can you detect if the raised metal outlining some of the devices looks heaped up? I am just speculating here and may be completely wrong, but I am somewhat troubled by what I see in the images. Raised bumps from die rust, in my limited experience, are usually sort of random in the fields, and don't congregate around the edge of the devices and letters. I'm sure someone with more experience and savvy will be along presently with a better explanation for what I am seeing. Again, not having the coin in front of me, I can only offer these observations, so please consider my comments tentative at best.
Kaz , I got to remember to click on these pics , sure makes the things easier to see , The coin does have numerouse hairlines , but I don't see the raised areas usually caused by whizzing , but then you're better at seeing these things than I am , So I hope the op answers this for you and me . rzage
