I've been fiddling around with some new collecting paths and have come up with two choices. Which would you pick and/or find more interesting? 1. Dime sized coins of the world in a Dansco album 2. Silver coins from the countries that used to be a part of the Soviet Union With option 1, I already have a blank Dansco album for Dimes. Since there are no dates and I'm not the biggest fan of doing a Barber/Mercury/Roosevelt date set, I figured the idea of dime sized coins from around the world would be more interesting and allow for plenty of variety. With option 2, I have a few countries already in my collection (Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Belarus, Ukraine) but the more challenging ones still remain. This is also an area that does not have much info available or posted in the various forums I visit, so I would be exploring relatively fresh grounds.
If money is not a limiting factor, I would say BOTH. I can understand your passion for #2, having dipped into that well a fair bit, recently.
The answer is always both. Whatever fits best at the time that you find and jump back and forth as opportunity presents itself
The nice thing is that both options should be relatively affordable. The challenge with #2 is the lack of supply among US sellers. I've been eyeing a few coins from international sellers but haven't pulled the trigger yet.
I'm still looking for my first ancient but haven't focused on that too much. If I see something that catches my eye, I could add it as part of my "box of 20" collection.
I had to change my path too. I ran out of US stuff to collect since I am not in to the ballast they are minting. I went to cleaning and identifying ancients. The field is unlimited. The support is fantastic. The budget is very flexible. The subject matter is simply what you want.
I say door #2 because it is more challenging, however, door #1 offers the challenge of finding coins to fit properly in the album.
Me too. You just have to be patient with shipping and customs. I got a few coins from Germany, and San Marino, and it took 2+ months to get here.
I, personally, would go for #1. I have found that it is difficult to focus on two or more types to collect at one time. Finish one before moving to another, at least that's just me.
I am looking into your option 2 also. Going through all my Krause catalogs shows a world of possibilities. Former Russian states is interesting but finding solid info about correct mintages is time consuming but certainly there are plenty of nice designs and history. I have also noticed it can be difficult finding the same size coins across the spectrum of availability which makes building a DANSCO a bit tougher. Eventually you will find your path.
Option 2 would not involve a Dansco as that would be challenging (those coins will either be certified or raw in original packaging/capsules). And yes it can be difficult finding info, even though many of these coins were made relatively recently (early 1990s through modern day). Option 1 would involve a Dansco just because I already have the album. I'm guessing some coins will exactly match the size of a US Dime but others might not (so the idea would be to focus on coins that I know should fit).
Go with British colonial half crown/florin size coins from less commonly collected series. Think Straits Settlements, South Africa, Fiji, Mauritius, South Rhodesia, etc. Some gorgeous pieces there, to say nothing of bargains when taking relative rarity into account!
I have an interest in the former USSR, so my vote is for #2, as long as you include Transnistria's Ruble.
