    I just bought a 1964 dime listed MS 64 but the serial below says SAMPLE 654321 . 64 /12345678

    What does this mean.

without seeing the slab itself, it's difficult to tell you. post it.

You know, I think I found out. I checked on Google and found an auction of a Kennedy. He says they are handed out at big coin shows by the company to showcase their product. Don't know what it does to the value though.

I have gotten free sample slabs at coin shows, but they didn't habe grades on them. They just said "uncirculated" or something like that.

Thats why I asked to see the slabb. They cannot assign a grade to a coin that are "samples". It's illegal to offer a sample and assign a grade for valuation.

Go to sampleslabs.com and you'll see plenty of them.

Not at all. Many of the grading services did this.
    Nothing illegal.

Yes I know that. The OP didn't state that it was in a TPG holder. I thought it was just a sample coin given out by some trademark company. It that case, they cannot assign a grade to the coin/holder.

Why cant they? What would stop them?
Anyone can make up sample slabs and put anything they wish on the label.

As I understood the OP, the coin was not a TPG sample coin. For instance, say one of the Food chains were giving away "sample" 2009 Dimes in their holder, they legally cannot assign a grade to coin/holder. To do so would be a violation under Business Practice Law and Trademark Infringement . Now as in the other Post where legal issues and all sorts of nonsensical interpretations of Law were thrown about, I don't intend to incite or partake in that exercise again.

If there were not legal implications in doing so, don't you think we would have all sorts of business doing so? There are Laws protecting the rights of those whose sole business purpose is in that area of "expertise" .

I'll just say I don't agree and that anyone can make up sample slabs with anything they wish on the label and give them away. They would have problems if they used the name of some other company without permission on the slab. That would be a Trademark Infringement. This is not a difficult legal issue.
