Have you ever heard of this, it was recently discussed at our coin club meeting http://silver-dollar-finder.com/SilverDollarFinder-1964PeaceDollar.htm
I think the pictures above are photoshopped. As far as I know, none of these coins have ever surfaced and for sure none have been graded by a TPG.
I see what you are saying, and I cannot see any listing of them at NGC or PCGS but I did see some interesting stuff on google that states there might be a few that went out via employee purchases. Who knows? see this An article by E-Sylum subscriber Michael Marotta notes: "Writing in his Encyclopedia, Walter Breen said: "Fern Miller, of the Denver Mint, told the local coin dealer Dan Brown that as usual various employees had purchased two new dollars apiece, but that when the recall came in, nobody kept any record either of the numbers sold to employees or the numbers turned in." The quantity melted was determined by weight. Anyone could have substituted other cartwheels for their 1964-D samples. Therefore, it is not surprising that Barry Krause and other writers continue to theorize that 1964-D Peace Dollars do exist."
Interesting story, wish I had one. Not that I want to be a law breaker or anything but I'm sure it could be sold for plenty of money, too bad it could possibly be confiscated. That wouldn't be any fun. :headbang:
If one were to show up and were made legal to own, it would bring several million at auction. The way things are it would be foolish for someone to admit owning one.
These are illegal to own, subject to confiscation, and they exist. And no, this pic has not been photo-shopped. I see no reason for the '64 Peace to be any different.
The story listed in Breen has been the standard thought for some time but Roger Burdette, in his book on Peace dollars, gives some good arguments for why the release of the coins COULDN'T have happened that way. I don't KNOW if any of them got out, but I do know of two silver dollar specialists who say they HAVE seen examples. One other tidbit, once when asked point blank if any of the 64-D peace dollars had gotten out, Walter answered "Definitely not", while nodding his head up and down.
I have no doubt that there are 1964 dollars out there. But, none have ever been slabbed by a TPG and there are no publicly known examples. I would love to see one though.
why the mint issue 1964 silver dollar at the first place?. is that a private mint?. or just a fake one?.
Going from memory, I believe President Kennedy was very interested in returning silver dollars to circulation and the peace design was to be used. It seems credible to me that a few survived and I'd love to see one.
If somebody has one they're probably keeping their mouth shut and you can't blame them. It would not surprise me if there are some left. They're probably waiting for enough time to pass or a law to change before coming out. At which point, some millionaires probably couldn't touch one.
