So I have been into coins for a couple of years (I am only 21 lol) but never really had statement pieces in my collection. I have recently come across my grandfathers collection, who passed almost 10 years ago. I absolutely wanted to appreciative and continue this collection. He ran a gold and silver shop back in the day so the collection is actually quite impressive and in great/MS condition because he knew how to store them. My affinity is mostly for the Morgans. I would like to get a good amount of them graded because of the condition they are in although I have never had anything graded before. My question for you guys is on this coin, a semi key date 1892-O Morgan. My inclination tells me this is a pretty high grade maybe 64 or so but the slight damage on the rim scares me because I don't know if this warrants a "details Rim Damage" from ether of the grading companies. There are a lot more coins that I have that are in better condition than this if you guys would be interested in seeing them. Hope you all have a great day!
First, welcome to the neighborhood, Josh! That ding above the "M" might just do it in. You might want the opinion of someone who has been accustomed to submitting Morgans. @Morgandude11 - Are you around?
Thank you for the welcome! Yeah just don't know what they constitute "Rim damage" most of the examples I have seen the rims are totally destroyed or a lot of dings, thought they would let through a ding or two but I do see the possibility of this being too much of a ding.
Thanks for the welcome. It is a substantial ding but since it is only focal on one location and not all around the rim and doesn't affect the obverse or reverse Hoping they would let it slide but only take it down a grade lol. Appreciate the response!
That coin is not even close to MS condition. There is obverse damage to the lower left field, which looks like improper handling. The rim damage is severe—that, alone hugely devalues the coin. The coin, if submitted to any TPG would not grade. I would grade the coin as AU details, damaged. Sorry to burst your bubble, but the coin is not what you think it is, original poster. Shame, as that is a better date Morgan.
Appreciate your take on this. I can definitely see what you are talking about. Coin looks a lot better when I look at it close under light then it comes across on the picture. Thanks for your time, Have a great rest of your day.
