Well, I decided to spend my weekly beer allowance on coins today.... so, I drove the five minutes to my local coin shop and grabbed this mixed up lot of low grade beauties. I know, the purist among us will say I should of saved my money and bought that high grade coin... at least that's what I hear most of the time on CT. But you know what? I love low grade stuff, so that's what I bought! Except for the Columbian Expo half (which is probably a nicely toned AU) all the others are G/VG at best. Here's what I got for my twenty-nine bucks:
    1916 Barber Dime
    1909 & 1914 Barber Quarter
    1910-S Barber Half
    1856 Large Cent (holed)
    (12) full date (all different) Buffalos
    (6) common date IHC's
    Columbian Expo Half

Awww man I am not a purist I love low grade stuff also. I added three low grade large cents to my collection. I will post the 1796 - plus an 1808 and 1809. Nothing great on the last two but they are more solid than the 1796. I keep thinking about a bust dime or half dime collection in low grade. I also do not shy away from some cleaned coins. :) Now having said that some of the really high grade stuff I drool over, but skip-and my IHC collection is low to high grades.

Thanks Mark... glad someone likes this low grade stuff. I think it goes back to my roots of collecting... back in the 50's grade didn't seem to matter near as much as it does today. As long as you could read the date you had a winner. Wish I still had all my old Whitman folders...

That's the 1893 Columbian Expo commerative half.... and I'm picking up my copy of "Dummies" over at Amazon along with the red book and blue book for $39.95 total!

I really love low grade coins in a way. At one flea market there is a dealer that sells virtually thousands of coins. They are all DUMPED into bins and you just go through and take out what you want. His prices USED to be rediculously low until I stupidly gave him a price list. However, prior to that I probably ended up with over 2,000 Mercury Dimes over the years from him. Although most are just OK coins, some were really sort of on the scarce listings. I did manage to snag one 42D/41 from him though. I did tell him about that but he just said good catch, so what else do you need? I also go through all the junk boxes at coin shows too.
There are many collectors that have to have the best of the coins. I'd rather have lots and lots of them.

Yes and no to that - there are some low grade coins I just can't handle. I like to be able to see dates and to me a collection of G's is just as nice as a collection of MS64's.

Quite impressive for $29 , and there's nothing like a horde of nice circulated coins you can touch .

I find the low grade stuff more affordable. :D So most of my collection is low grade. ;)

    Nice pick-ups! :thumb:

    Ribbit :)

Ps: I just picked up a low grade Saint Patricks Farthing today and I've always wanted one but they are so darn expensive. :goofer:

I am trying to get as many different US coins as possible for my grandchildren all low grade. I have been collecting the last 50 years of proof sets and mint sets as my main collection. But I want at least one example of as many different coins as possible. that is a great pickup for $29 dollars. Grocery money maybe, but beer money!!! I don't know!!:hail:

30 clams, good deal on your part and the dealer's part. He turned some low end inventory and you got some cool coins.

I think you got a good deal, and I see no problem with low grade coins. Buy what you like, like what you buy!

In the last 3 months I snagged two AG-Good 1921 Walking Liberty Halves and an XF 1921 Mercury Dime at about 10X face value (varies each week) from my local dealer. Love it when I can get to the buckets before his employees do. Buying silver at cost is one thing but finding that little treasure keeps me going back week after week.
