Seems a bit high. I have one in about that condition and it's a VAM-4 and I got it for $15 a couple of weeks ago. I'll post pics later. Ribbit
The VAM 3 is the most desirable of the 4 O over S varieties. 65 dollars seems like a fair price for a ungraded XF45. The last one VamWorld has listed sold for $102.50 in XF45 last year. VAMworld - 1882-O VAM-3 Though I'm not sure what the average price is for a VAM 3 now, I'll look around.
Seems like the price has held, one just sold today for $105 in XF45 graded by NGC. 1882 O/S VAM 3 EDS NGC XF45 Morgan Dollar TOP 100 NR - eBay (item 230367786993 end time Aug-22-09 10:48:53 PDT) So $65 sounds like a fair deal, of course if you've got a keen eye you can still cherrypick them like Toad did :thumb:.
Thanks for the help. The seller listed it as a Vam3 and used the term "flush" and it seems that it is flush. Does that help or hurt it, if anything?
Raider The one I was looking at looks is in about the same shape as the one you listed, I just wish the one you listed did not have the "gold" lighting.
"Flush" is just the term used for the VAM 3 because the S under the O is flush (there at the same level). They use the term flush because there are 2 other varieties, the recessed S, and the broken S. So it's just used to differentiate between the varieties.
Must be nice having them Toad eyes I can't spot a fly till it lands on my nose and you can see VAM-4s on a tiny screen , keep it up buddy .:thumb::bow: rzage
Is it raw? The one thing everyone has not mentioned - have you or can you confirm it is a VAM-3? I would hate for you to spend $65 for a lesser VAM. I am not an expert on these and you do not sound so positive yourself. How much do you trust the seller? Just trying to exercise caution here.
If you're looking to use some pics to compare to the coin you might buy, check out this page one heritage Search results for: (p 22, and p 23). There are a bunch of pics of the 1882 O/S in XF45, but not all of them are the VAM 3.
I trust the seller explicitly, honest and have a 7day return. I didn't post it, because I think it is a nice coin for the money. I'm going to take a flyer and post it. I'm not going to buy it, just wanted to see what the opinions were. http://imagehost.vendio.com/bin/vie...=0&vsid=1&vgp=1&vimgs=2599003.jpg,2599004.jpg It is not a great pic, but like I stated, they are a good seller.
Here's the auction where I got mine: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=130315043156&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT I haven't had time to take pics yet and now I have to go get gas, since the new can I got is empty. :goof: I'm starving so that doesn't help matters and I've got some gorgeous NY Strips in the fridge, with some stuffed portabellas to grill with my steak, so I need gas. Seems like for the 1882-0 there are four different VAMs of the O over S variety , two are R-3s and the other two are R-4s , some are very similiar. rzage
I would have missed it completely , but knowing it's a VAM - 4 , I think I can see where the inside of the O is o little irregular , and at that price it was a good buy even if it wasn't a VAM ,but so much the better that it is . Nice find Toad .:hail: rzage
What surprised me were the pimples all over the coin. :goofer: Under normal circumstances, pimples are found on counterfeits and I thought mine was a counterfeit until I checked VamWorld and found out the dies for the VAM-4 were rusted and the pimples should be there. I do not collect Morgans but I couldn't resist this one because of the price. If I go outside of my normal collecting areas, it's usually because I can't resist the price and I've gotten several coins I don't collect and some day I'll sell them on Ebay for a profit. This one is earmarked to be sold at our next coin club meeting, since we have a big auction planned for the upcoming meeting and many of the members collect Morgans and will want it. :eat: Ribbit
The EDS versions on of the 82-O O/S are currently the most desirable. I find it difficult to distinguish some of the EDS versions. The O/S attribution guide on VAMworld has some great images for comparison. Here are the values listed in the 2009 VAM Value Guide. These are based on actual sales. VF Grade VAM 3 $75 VAM 3EDS $120 VAM 4 $75 VAM 4EDS $3500 (yes, over three grand) VAM 5 $75 VAM 5EDS $120
