Has anyone tried to sell at one? I am asking because I am planning on having one soon and am wondering if it was worth selling some wheats there. I already have them sorted and ready to go. For the commons I thinking 10 cents each or 15 for a dollar. How did you go about it if you did sell this way?
I wouldn't do it. Around me it would be inviting a burglary. You are safer if nobody knows you collect coins.
It will be at a different location other than my house and it will involve several families so I don't think I have to worry about theft.
I have some halves and $2's ready for the garage sale that probably won't happen this year. Please let us know how it goes.
Buyers at garage sales (and flea markets also) are notoriously cheap... just try and sell a coin for anywhere near retail! I've tried a few times to dump some extras and believe me, it's no easy task. As an experiment, I priced a common $2 bill at one dollar. Not a single taker, though I did have an offer for fifty cents. It's still alot of fun, and putting out some wheats or dateless buffalos can result in some interesting conversation. I did sell a tin can full of common wheats for a couple of bucks... there were about 150 of them, so I had a happy buyer. I wouldn't worry about any perspective burglars unless I was showing off a bunch of gold or some really rare and expensive stuff. And I don't think anyone would be doing that at a garage sale, at least none I've ever seen.
Now that's funny :thumb: Then again, I lived in New Jersey for a few years so it's not that surprising.
I say go ahead and do it, because it only takes one interested person to buy the whole lot. You made a little bit of money and they just got a bunch of wheats for less money. I wish more people sold coins at garage sales, sometimes some cool things can be found.
A buddy of mine sold some morgans that he bought at the local coin store for $14 a piece at the garage sale for $25 apiece! Sweet $9 profit, I'm thinking about doing the samething at my next garage sale.:thumb:
I had a garage sale about a month back. We had hundreds of the better Whitman albums and Redbooks at $1.00 each but sold very few. I gave away probably 50 Redbooks but some folks wouldn't even take them for free. It was fun talking with folks about coins.
As soon as I saw your post the above is the first thing that came to my mind. Although you may think all your neighbors are nice people and they well may be, stories about money tend to change as they are told. A stranger seeing some coins for sale may tell someone about many coins for sale who tells someone about thousands of coins for sale. This may tend to grow until the wrong individual hears about your fantastic wealth and one more home invasion on the way.
My post of a possible robbery due to the advertising of someone with coins may well be something for the present. Today the amount of home invasions are fantastically on the rise. This is possibly due to the economy but letting anyone know you have anything of value today is just not smart. Try to remember that it is not necessarily someone you know but the many, many people that roam the garage/yard/estate sales for just those possilbe next robbery sites.
The garage sale is the great American common man's store. Go ahead I have actually picked up some coins and other great stuff at them.....
My wife yells at me all the time, the little town we live in has one tavern which is where we all go to gossip and swap stories. Everyone in town knows I am into coins and they get tired of me going on and on about them. wednesday is cheap beer day and kind of the day we all get together. Just to agravate everyone I try and take a different coin or mint set or proof set each wednesday to talk about and to bug my buddies. My wife says that someone who is a crack head or other low life will see me doing this and kill us in our sleep for our coin fortune!!! That would definately liven things up in our sleepie little town!!!:hatch:
My very first thought. If I were to have a garage sale, the last thing I would put out is coins or anything similar.
I'll give you a dollar per $2 bill you got... anyone that turns that offer down is an idiot cause you can only double your $$$ at least
