    You did well.

I kind of like the rust. If you don't like the rust, then perhaps I should trade you a real shiny polished coin for your rusty one. -Kidding of course.

It is a nice looking coin & I like the original toning.

    Well lol funny man.

I guess I have to learn to appreciate rust and toning in coins since it's probably hard to find a near perfect shiner without it being cleaned or heavily priced.

My goal from all this: Buy at the bid. Or at least try to negotiate your way so you can.

$617 for this coin is alright I think from reading the Grey Sheets, PCGS's site, and Red Book, but I surely could have aimed for $580.

    Live and learn.

Hey guys, this 1928 Peace dollar with great luster was purchased for $575 flat. I think this one is going to be a knockout.

I love coins that are visually appealing. Anything that detracts from its perfection to me takes away from the value, but in the case of thie Morgan, it's an old coin so it's apart of its appeal.

Rust? RUST? It's called "toning" and is typical and sometimes desired.

Hard to tell the grade of the '85cc morgan from the photo, but the reverse looks pretty good for an MS63. Also looks to be in a green label PCGS holder which some people will pay a premium for.

    Not too bad :)

Jay you've come a long way since the start of this thread. I'm happy to see you bought that PCGS book. With me, my problem is being too impatient and impulsive. Sometimes it takes years to find the right coin...but for me it has to be immediate. Take people's advice and know that there's always more to learn, no one knows everything. Ignore the insults, but take constructive critism. Try to see it from the other persons perspective...

I also need to learn how to grade as well...that's one thing I'm lacking. It's definitely not easy, going through the PCGS book. You have to take in factor so many things, strike, eye appeal, marks, luster, ugh. Good luck to you, keep it up!

Has PCGS ever published their 'grading set' coins? Those would be cool to see.

What brand do some of you suggest I get for a magnifying piece?

    Leadfoot there is no spoon

The best are Zeiss or Eschenbach, IMO. The wider (larger diameter) the better.

You can get away with cheaper alternatives. Perhaps someone can also recommend a more affordable example as well.

No it is not harshly cleaned or NGC would have body bagged it. However, I find that coin to be very generic in it's appearance and lacking in eye appeal.

    Good answer from Lehigh.

Jay, Consider looking for a 3-leg at the next show you attend. You may see first hand how to authenticate the 3-leg and you might even find a great coin or befriend a dealer or two. Also, there is no hurry to get the 3-leg. There will be more.

Yeah I know. Just to mention, I'm just showing auctions to get an idea of what some of you think.. That way I start to understand what has value and what does not.. Then maybe one day I can write a book about it... ok that's jumping the gun.. lol

How much do you think that Buff I showed above is worth really?

I have been looking for an eye appealing 3 Legger for years now. I get outbid on every one that hits the market. I was outbid on this one.

    Jay,

I was just messing with you on my other post, mentioning that it looks like you bought at least 10 other things on ebay. Get anything nice besides what you posted or were you just dabbling? How you doing with the set of 20 ASE's? Just so you know, he does have a little bit of a following and it will get hit late by the snipers, so you might want to pay some attention to it when it gets down to under a minute.
