Instead of running the U. S. Quarters into the ground over & over why dosn't the U. S. Gov. / U. S. Mint put the new National Parks on the 2010 Half Dollar. Think about it :stooge: , there would be a lot of room on the half to let the artist go wild comming up with some awesome designs. Lets face it another 11 years of quarters geezzzzzzzz enough is enough. Don't those folks in Wash. who make these decisions ever use a little imagination. :hatch::hammer: . What do you folks think, I think it would be really coooool to start collecting silver proof and clad halves:) Change people change, its what makes the world go-round.

because the half dollar is not much circulated. the mint issue half dollar for collectors only.

understood elaine, but don't you think like the state quarter program a new demand would come about for the halves , granted there are far less in circulation of the halves but I think there would be a huge new demand for the halves . The prestiential dollar and Indian dollars have rose greatly in mintage since the collectability aspect has kicked in.

I think I would rather they offer a high relief bronze medal version of what goes on the quarter.

I am tired of these new quarters and want them to pick a timeless classic design that will last the next 50 years. No more presidential faces or symmetrical eagles. Something really classic.

the presidential dollars were not accepted by most american. only the collectors enjoyed it. as far as the state park quarter series. i will not buy any nor collect them.

Bronze is so underutilized and appreciated. I like your idea.

interesting elaine , as a collector I look forward to new coin designs , the state quarters were new and set records in their sales, but I've been there done that & now lets go on to another coin , halves. I'am speaking strickly as a collector , I have never sold a coin & don't buy for resale .but I do respect yourself and other folks that collect for future profits and or resale, that's cooooooooool, just not my cup of tea : )

    I like this idea.
It might cause the half to circulate more if they did that, and minted them for circulation :)

While that is not a bad idea, I am thinking along the lines of designing a modern version of Liberty with classic lines like the old flowing hair design but different some how. Keep it simple and not too busy.

For the reverse we need a new Eagle again with a simple classic design, I really don't like the one on pre-states quarters with the symmetrical eagle. It needs to be in a Majestic pose and have some kind of relief. I know the mint has the technology to no make it as flat as the current ones.

If they can pull this off I think it is a coin that the U.S. population majority could be proud to use. I believe the novelty of changing reverses has worn off.

Yes! That is overall the greatest problem with the design of the State Quarters looking at them as a whole body of work, there was no sense of anyone with taste nor skills to edit what they threw on the reverse. It's way too busy and many have details that will likely wear off in circulation so early on they are pointless to have added some of those things. Thoughtful design and artistry have to return and this breakneck production needs to just kicked it back a few steps for better quality.

I don't collect any of these things but I DO sell them at work all day.

I kinda like the idea myself. Put the half dollar back on the map as it were.

1st there has been alot of talk about the state Quarters, I wish they would stop minting them and go back to the American Eagle on the rev. As to the Half dollar I think its time for a change, no more Kennedys please. They call them Silver eagles on the $1 but they really brought the Walking Lady Liberty back so why not OBV from one of the old halfs and the REV eagle from another old half, I'd like that.

I wasn't interested in the state quarters much, but the National Parks was an interesting idea. What will decide if I collect them or not will be if the mint follows the recommendation to Teddy Roosevelt on there. If they do, I will definitely collect them.

As for the half dollar suggestion, I would like to see them on there instead of quarters, but I think it would be much harder to get Kennedy off that coin then Washington off the quarter.

Isn't going to happen. It would require new legislation, none has been introduced and they have to start production in about three months.

As to putting the parks design on half dollars, that would also be a failure for the same reason the President dollars was. You can't get the general public excited about and collecting a coin by changing the design on a coin they never see. The quarters they saw every day in their pocket change so they noticed the state quarters and collected them. The President dollars they never saw and so interest in them never developed except among coin collectors.

I fully agree with the OP on this issue. I think the half dollar needs a complete overhaul, especially since the Mint has messed up Kennedy's portrait as well. Perhaps a program like the quarters will get the half dollar circulating again!!
