This coin was graded over 10 years ago. Think it's an upgrade shot?

    I do.

Beautiful example , are there any hairlines that you can see in hand where we can't see them ? I know they didn't like giving out grades higher than 66 back then , that's why I ask .

Honestly I can't tell with the way the lighting is glaring on the surface. There is no way to tell if hairlines etc.. are keeping the grade accurate or under/over graded.

I see that too but based on the hammered details of the obverse I would chalk that up to the light toning removal that the main feilds appear to have had at some point.

You're probably right as it seems to fit , still a lovely coin I would love to have , If I could find one like it for around a grand I'd snap it up in a second .

Going just by the picks , I'd say yours deservrves a point or two upgrade .

Please use this post as a learning experience of an opinion that the coin deservese a point or two increase , it was wrong to state that as pictures can be decieving and you really can't tell , so I never should of posted it or at least put a diclaimer that it was only my opinion based on iffy pictures .

These coins in low to mid MS grade are typically graded on how many hairlines they have -- and the photograph was taken in such a way as it doesn't show them well (but hints at their presence).

Regardless of grade, what a cool coin & thanks for sharing...Mike

There is no way you can make that statement based on the photo you just showed which could equally be hiding hairlines etc with the way it was taken.

I'll take a better picture of this piece tomorrow. I haven't seen any hairlines but I'm gonna get the bright lights out tomorrow. I'll get a non cameoed pic tomorrow. The weakness on the wing on the reverse is the result of strike and not wear.

I see a few harilines in the left obverse field in the pics posted.

The left wing tips appear to be brighter than the rest of the wing as if something, maybe toning was removed to make it shine like that.

That's why I said based on the photos , this is the better of the 63s at Heratige , and I just happen to think the ops coin is a tad better , of course based on any coin picture it's almost impossible to be 100% accurate , so I guess your saying I shouldn't judge any coins because the pics could be off , so why ask for an opinion .:D

I think those are where some toning was removed at some point. Sometimes something as small as just running your finger across a toned coin can remove toning. But there could very well be some there, I don have the coin in my hand at the moment so I cant loupe that specific area but i'll take a good pic of it tomorrow.

Given the nature of hairlines and internet photos, I doubt anyone can give you a definitive "yes". PR64s are (or should be) really great coins, so only resubmit if it's a really strong coin.

Looks like a beautiful coin. Enjoy ! :thumb:

In the vast majority if cases, including this one, there is simply no way to provide meaningful grade opinions on Proof coins, based on images. For example, despite a few comments in this thread, it appears from the images as if the 1863 Dollar could be a PR67. But I'm certain that there are flaws on the coin, not apparent in the images, which keep the grade down.

I repeat, in the vast majority if cases, including this one, there is simply no way to provide meaningful grade opinions on Proof coins, based on images.

After getting the bright lights out there are some hairlines. Some of the lines in the picture are on the slab, there are a few in the area mentioned. The coin also has some sort of residue on it, maybe light pvc or just some funky toning. These are the ones above (moving northeast to southwest.) the area in question which under the bright lights is just toning. There are also a few on the reverse which under my normal lights I couldn't see. So now I'm thinking not an upgrade, but she takes a heck of a picture at least!! :smile

I hadn't read this thread until just now. But even based on the first pic supplied the first thing that went thru my mind is - that coin has been wiped. Now seeing the additional pic I'm reasonably sure my first impression was correct.

I agree with what Mark says about needing to see a coin in hand. However - and I think is true more times than not when you are wondering about a coin upgrading, even though all you have are pics to go by. When you are trying to figure out why the grade of coin is lower than your think it should be, your first impressions for that reason are usually correct.

It is in cases like this that I am far more likely to trust the opinion of the graders when all I have is a picture to go by. You may think the reasoning doesn't follow then when I question if a coin is over-graded, but it actually does. For I am still trusting my eyes over theirs. Sure, I find that I may change my mind later based on additional pics or seeing the coin in hand from time to time. But the majority of the time I do not change my mind.

If there is one about coin pics that I have found out over the years, it is that the picture often allows you to see what you missed with your eyes during an in hand exam.

The real problem you face with pictures is that you usually have no idea if the pictures are what I call - honest pictures. By that I mean that most people tend to take pics, or I should say share pics, that show the coin in it's best light. In other words if a particular picture shows the hits, hairlines etc - flaws if you will, then those pics usually are not presented. They instead tend to present the pics that show the best aspects of the coin - not its flaws. This is usually true not only for collectors wishing their new acquistions, it is usually also true with auction pictures.

Once you know this and understand it, it then becomes easier to interpret pictures and see the things that the picture only hints at. Yeah, you can read it wrong and misinterpret as well. But with practice you do that far less often and you will find that you are right more times than not.

I guess you could say that I find reading pictures is an acquired skill just like grading coins is an acquired skill. And yeah, I know many will skoff at me for saying that - doesn't mean it isn't true though.

Why are so many of these seem to be wiped?
