For me as a new member, and a beginner in collecting and understanding coins. I'm taking it as a hobby that would create something for me to leave for my children in the future, as a legacy or heritage. Mr. Coin Lover thanks for th words, and you shouldn't hesitate to post something like this, its for the best of all the members, and people who really do care about coins whether as a hobby or investment. Thank you for the effort you put in this post. Cheers,
Interesting thread. As in any hobby isn't it normal and natural to seek information as to where to best place your assets? I see nothing wrong with this and it goes on all the time.
In my opinion - people who approach coin collecting absent of an investment mindset in most cases end up collecting a bunch of garbage.
I would just like to apologize to that "new member" for my nastier comments in the thread he started but not those stating a need for education etc. I too think this thread was in bad taste now that I reread it all I feel only regret if that "member" has read the first parts and not the last few. From experience on my own chatter sites it is very hard for a newbie to come in and not feel odd about posting period. The old "am I making a fool of myself with these people who know everything" is there.
Lehigh I read your post about five times. I would like to point out a few things: 1. I can assure you and anyone else interested that this was in no way directed to any particular member. If you have noticed I have not been posting much here lately due to the fact I have been so busy. I have been reading here and talking with some of my Friends here either by PMs or telephone. This is a subject that was mentioned in those and never once did a person's Avatar or a particular thread come up. 2. The reason I was hesitant to post it in the first place was I didn't want to embarrass anyone. I've also reread my original post and I tink it is generic enough no member would feel any embarrassment by it. 3. Whether someone reads the thread or not is their decision to include making a reply. It is certainly up to them whether or not to vote or not vote for it. But Lehigh, who are you to start telling people what to do regarding those that have already voted. Isn't that somewhat brazen for you to do that? 4. I personally don't think anyone has been anymore proactive than me concerning new members. Up until the last couple of months probably one-half of my total posts have been welcomng new members. I spent a lot of time writing and rewriting my "Value of a Coin Talk Membership" that was nothing more than to get some of guests that come here to join. I am a Supporter of Coin Talk and was part of the original twenty to twenty-five that became Supporters. 5. The purpose of this thread was to try to attempt to assist some new members here our opinions are not investment advice, and self study is the key. I'm trying not to, but by now I'm starting to get PO'd about all this. I didn't write this for any award so I'll make you happy and at the same time you don't have to go directing people to withdraw their vote. Talk about poor taste, did you reread what you posted? 6. While I really appreciate all those that voted when I finish this I'm going to send Peter a PM asking him to withdraw all the votes. Actually I'll send the message as soon as I'm done here, but any Administrator that reads this can withdraw them. The votes are appreciated, but not written for them.
I hope it work's I have noticed a few member that dispute anything that is posted. I am not pointing this post at anyone member!
You ask me, you two are acting like a couple grade-schoolers, now. And, for the record, that is directed at you and Lehigh. Withdraw the nomination, PM Peter...huh? You got something to say, get it off your chest and say it. Carrying on like this, though, in this round-about way, I don't think there are very many of us, here, who have even the slightest idea what the hell you two are quibbling about...much less give a damn. :rolling:
You're right I'm sure, but I think I've said about all I got to say. It is actually refreshing that you don't give a damn. I'm sure when Lehigh and I agree to quit disagreeing everything will be just fine.
I liked your comments relative to the subject-matter, just not the spooky turn the thread took. But I can see from the above you kinda understand that; thanks, that's kinda kewl of you. :kewl:
I think most people today buy coins thinking they are an investment, look at how many buy the silver commemorates in multiples.Chances are the ones released in the last few years will in the long run be under performers but many don't see it that way. Who is buying all the counterfeits and junk out there, not us. The majority though don't read about coins, only buy it seems. I think the hardest thing about coins is to be willing to pay more for a quality coin vs. quantity.
Unfortunately, when people get dollar signs in their eyes their ears automatically close. It seems that's just the way it is. Very profound GD. Traci
Very well said. I have the same thoughts when it comes to mint products in general from the last 5 years or so. Unfortunately because folks don't read up on things before they buy they will be burned in the long run and most likely will quit the hobby because of this. Can't really blame the counterfeiters so much as the buyers who keep buying them from e-bay as there are so many articles and websites that warn against buying RAW on e-bay unless you know the series well enough to detect counterfeits.
Mr. Coin Lover. You really could have just posted number 1 and I would have apologized. As I stated in my first post, I agree with the entire content of your post and think it is sound advice for any member. My concern was that it was directed at a particular new member. You have stated unequivocally that it was not and I believe you. It is unfortunate that I equated your hesitation in combination with the timing of the post with calling out the new member. Regarding my reason to call for the withdrawal of votes for TOTW, it was predicated on the idea that the thread was about that person. I just couldn't imagine him reading the thread and seeing others jumping in and calling it the TOTW. Brazen or not, I felt at the time it was the right thing to do. I apologize to you for assuming that the thead was about one individual. I hope you can understand why I would have come to that conclusion. I don't know about you, but I am ready to move on and will not harbor any feelings of ill will and would hope you could to the same.
Lehigh, your apology is accepted. I hope you will accept mine also. Please understand I was getting a little PO'd about your post, that is my fault not yours. I guess what I got PO'd about was how misconstrued my intentions became. What has been posted has been posted and what has been said has been said. The important posts between you and I are the last two posts we've exchanged.
LOL! Great comments. I wish they would sticky this thread. There's always somebody who enters into something and thinks they're one of the very few to ever think of doing it and plan on making easy money. Because 'nobody else has ever thought of doing the same'. Although, I know there are many coin dealers who have become far wealthier than me. But part of that, that a lot of people don't realize, is their ability to buy at whole sale prices, just like every other business out there. To buy ANYTHING at retail and intend to profit any time soon is usually a tall order in any field.
Well, I just went back and read the rest of this dispute after my last post. I admit, I may have thought for a moment about the 'most recent' poster obsessed with investing, but it was a fleeting moment. I did not get the feeling that this post was aimed at one person, but at a collection of people and posts that seems to be never ending. This comes up a lot. And I don't believe Coin Lover should have anything to apologize about. It isn't his fault that many are so anxious to act that they won't take a minute of time for themselves to read the multitudes of information that have been posted here in the past, on other sites or in book form. This post sums up an excellent lesson for many people here, past, present and future members. It hit the nail square on the head. I didn't feel it was in bad taste. I'm all for making it a sticky at the top.
Just buy everything off of the Coinvault, three nights a week they sell for hundreds under the other guys!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
