PSA (Public Service Announcement) for the youngsters who don't know.

Let's talk about frustrated, rude, lazy coin roll hunters...
This is not ok. I'm just saying. It's obviously someone here in the Denver area.

Clearly this person is not asking the right questions at the Credit Union of Denver...Questions like..."hey, are these re-wraps of the coins I brought back last week like I keep doing over and over and over here at this same location?" o_O lol!
Yes, the tellers will often know if it's their own coin orders coming back to the same branch!

I'm just saying...There were actually plenty of halves from my search with both this person's initials and a bunch of other sharpie marks and this was only a 10 roll search...No sir, I don't like it.:shifty:

It also just screams that this is someone who's likely just looking for silver and only obvious stuff and doesn't check for varieties the way we like to do here. This person clearly does not care about the people who are looking to fill books and find the hard to find things, etc... I'll be honest it just bothers me.

Thank you for letting me vent CT!:D

It’s pretty common with Kennnedys. 99% of Kenny’s who aren’t silver aren’t worth any more than face value. I’d anything, whoever marks the coins is doing yoy a favor by marking them and saving you
    Time

No sir! I respectfully disagree about that...this indicates clearly that this is someone who doesn't care and likely isn't checking for varieties as closely as some of us do!
Besides just being rude to people looking to fill books, give gifts, enjoy the search, etc...
Also they are being lazy...you can ask at the bank if you are getting recent re-wraps and the tellers will often know. Also this indicates someone who is probably bringing back their searched coins to the same branch repeatedly.
I would suggest as an alternative to put a little dot sticker on there or at least only mark the super junky-est coins!

I would agree with this. Silver is not the only thing that the Kennedy halves are worth searching through for. I would consider myself an errors/varieties collector over anything other category in the hobby, and seeing marker on coins is painful. Now, it may be able to be removed with pure acetone, which won't damage silver coinage (dimes, quarters, etc.), but I am not sure on that. Either way, yes I don't think it is right either to mark the coin itself, as it could have a valuable variety or error associated with it. I just mark the coin wrappers with my own symbol and that way I know if it is mine.

Isn't it a little stupid to ensure the same coins go to the same place? I wouldn't think they'd take it that seriously, but,

Actually a very good question... so bank branches regularly place orders to re-wrap their own coins from that branch and the orders come back from coin vendors like Loomis marked that way. So yup, in fact most of the tellers know when the coins are re-wraps from their own branch as apposed to fresh boxes of ordered rolls.

Most of us who search regularly are dropping off the searched coins at different locations. Simply being polite to the branches and tellers, and maybe sometimes bringing them cookies lol, will lead to interesting conversations.

When I go to my large branches I ask...are these a freshly ordered rolls or re-wraps? Do you have rolls that customers recently brought in? The branch managers don't want their tellers just spending time trying to accommodate CRHunters who like to come to the same branch once or twice a week to both pick up rolls and drop of searched coins.
Some banks charge a small fee if you order your own fresh boxes...but I've been going to the same local branches for almost 30 years and not being a burden, so they are honest with me and take care of me...and sometimes I leave without rolls or only get a few.

I know this will make some collectors crazy......but i find a drop or 2 of germex (hand sanitizer ) and a gentle rub between my fingers will take the sharpie marks off coins. it also removes some of the skin oil grime without harming natural patina. Also.....do not use the ones containing aloe.

That's why my rule is to never dump at the same bank you buy from, and never buy from your dump bank.

It's because of the alcohol...denatured alcohol would be an even better choice...without the rubbing:stop:...swishing is preferred, but not in your mouth o_O

I here ya, The sharpie drives me nuts, honestly though the sharpie saves me some time, Just went thru 100$ from a bank on Broadway
Thought I was gonna get skunked. At the last roll I hit a 40 percent Bicentennial and a 66. Out of 200 halfs a could only find 6 coins worth doing more than a quick flip to. None of them besides the silver were even worth keeping.

Gee whiz, P&G, that is too bad. I have not finished going through the rolls of pennies I got from the bank the other week. About 4 rolls in I realized that I had forgotten just how much touching icky, grimy, only-G-d-knows-what-is-on-them pennies skeeves me out. Guess I will wear a pair of my pandemic going-outside gloves next time.

IT decided to update the server at 7 am and wants about 5 hours to complete it. I wasn't gonna comment but I've nothing better to do until after lunch, so, here's my 2 cents.

With half dollars, nobody wants them as far as banks and stuff go. A searcher will search the heck out of it and return it, with or without a dump bank, and the banks will return it to the armored carrier, who will either 1. wrap them back up and send them for the next request, or 2. return them to the fed never to be seen again. These "silver hunters" are tagging coins in what they search in order to be able to tell at some point they've looked through all there is to look through in their distribution area. Yeah they aren't interested in varieties, really just the silver in most cases and blowing through the coins to return them.

Sucks that they write on them, but that's their method for them to determine it's time to give up or go further away to get more half dollars.I suppose cheap stickers that tear when you try to peel them would likely be even worse

JeffC Go explore something and think a happy thought!

Just curious - do you also need an account at the bank that you go to, to dump the coins?

Yes, the coin counting machine is for customers only, so I did get an account there. The account is free if you use your debit cards 15 times a mont, which I do. When I dump (today I dumped $738.00 dollars in quarters) I put the $38 in my account there and took the $700 in cash to my other bank where I bought $200 in Dollar coins (CWR). and put the rest in my account to buy more later. (just posted results of the $200 in dollars in the CRH results thread)

Don't mark the coins. It's a looser move! I usually try to be PC about this but I detest people who mark the coins before handing them back in. You don't know who is going to be searching what you hand back in OR who is looking for a coin to put in their book. Don't mark it. Don't.

I can agree Bam Bam. Even if most of these are nothing more than a cull, don't leave your mark on the coin by defacing it.
