Wow, so we have two potential record breakers coming up soon. The '22 half eagle and '33 double eagle. Sweet

Interesting article. He's also selling the plate block of Inverted Jenny stamps, and the One-Cent Magenta stamp, both famous and one of a kind. Because his heirs don't want the hassle. Ah, the problems some people have...

Do you think that the 1933 will fetch that much? I thought that a number of rarities have failed to reach their reserve prices recently.

It probably will.....but caveat emptor if the Langbord 10 coins ever hit the market.

Not that I think any buyer is going to need a stimulus check if he/she takes a hit on the coin. :D

It’s impossible to predict at those levels, but there’s at least double digits of the 33s just only one you can own. The Langboards case did sour a lot of people on the issue, I wouldn’t be surprised if it was like 6 mil nor if it was 11 if two whales really want it. Hansen needs it if he really wants one of everything but he's generally not been aggressive on the 7 figure coins in the past.

It sounds wishy washy but as long as it doesn't go super cheap any price will make sense. If I had to bet though no I don't think the 33 will set a new record

If 2 billionaires want it, it will set a new record.

Whoever has the 1933 can then have a complete -- THE ONLY complete -- set of Saint-Gaudens Double Eagles. Nobody can match that, unless/until the government liberates the stolen Langboard coins.

    What's another $5-$10 MM for a billionaire ?
Not much, as they probably have way more than that sitting in a money market fund earning 0.01% interest. :D

It’s widely believed more than just the Langboards are out there. Problem is that most people don’t consider it part of the set including some big money players and in terms of multi-million dollar coins it’s really not very rare by those standards. There’s a significant amount that value it less than 10 mil.

Could it go crazy sure, it I’m very skeptical of it setting a record. Hansen is the only one that really needs it if he really does want one of everything. He’s needs the 22 as well which there are only 3 of and 2 are in museums and auctions before.

The other thing too which is one reason why I’m skeptical of a record is that if someone really is prepared to set a record on it they could have privately made a record offer and kept it from auction.

I wouldn’t be shocked if the Pogue 22 went for more which is already over 1 mil with a couple weeks to go. If I had that money the 22 is what I’d go after between the two

The 1822 half eagle and the 1933 double eagle will possibly find a
    comfortable home with Tyrant.

And maybe he'll upgrade his Edward VIII £5 while he's at it.

I'm not familiar with the Edward VIII piece. Is there a link?

I scored 6 touchdowns in one game. I was voted "All Backyard" in 6th grade. Take

@messydesk Thanks for link. Looks nice. I wonder if the same cataloger
that did the Farouk auction did this one. Placing a million dollar coin amongst
more or less common coins by comparison.

The catalog is thick and full of stunning stuff, but this is the high ticket item of the sale. The rest are no slouches, though. Many 5-6 figure coins to keep it company.

That is a possibility, if this listing at the end of the article is correct:

    https://coinweek.com/us-coins/united-states-1933-double-eagle-20-gold-coin/

Still some confusion as to if it is or isn't The Farouk Coin, despite this article calling it such:

    https://www.coinworld.com/news/us-coins/breaking-news-farouk-1933-double-eagles-heads-to-auction
Could be, but the story behind the coin is unique.
Maybe...but maybe Sotheby's has more than 1 bidder for the coin, right ?

There’s a theory that someone who had one got the Farouk coin and then switched them keeping the better one and selling the lesser one as the Farouk. It’s not out of the question. Wouldn’t be able to do that now, but back then it’s entirely possible.

    Stories don’t break records
