what you guys think of it? I need opinions people! would you value an MS 66 washington smooth edge error at $185? or more? or less? NEED DATA!!! HELP!
OK. Sorry about that. I was thinking Washington QUARTER, not Washington DOLLAR. (You did not specify denomination. I don't know why I didn't think about the Washington Dollars that did not go through the edge lettering process.)
I think the Missing Edge Lettering dollars are sort of cool... The Washington is I think the most common and can be readily found in MS65 and MS66 grades. Only gets rare and really expensive if you're looking for an MS67. Not sure what the going rate is on the coin, but I'd check eBay completed listings for fairly accurate pricing. The Adams MEL dollars are a bit tougher and their prices reflect that. The Jefferson MEL dollars are much more rare and aren't seen on the market too often since they have been hoarded. I got one of those in MS67: Just hard to price these coins since they aren't in too many of the price guides. Need to go off of eBay completed listings and maybe Teletrade auction prices (they're listed under Error coins). For something like the Jefferson MEL dollar I have (an example has never been sold on Heritage or Teletrade) it's really hard to price. PCGS Guide says $5000, but there are a couple of MS65s on eBay, one at $5400 and an MS66 First Day of Issue for $15000!!!! There's also a Monroe MEL Satin Finish dollar that is rare and goes for big bucks!!! A major risk on any of these coins though is that a new hoard of several rolls will be discovered that'll substantially lower the price. Since these are only two years old, there's a much better chance that many more will be discovered vs. coins of similar value that are 100 years old.
That's true. The hype and hoopla surrounding the Missing Edge Lettering Washington Dollars drove the price through the roof (partially because of the missing Motto 'IN GOD WE TRUST' making them "Godless Dollars"). The craziness has settled down since then because, as illini pointed out, more examples have been discovered and because other Missing Edge Lettering Presidential Dollars were produced and also because they (the Missing Edge Lettering Washing Dollars) are no longer the newest sensation in coin collecting. I have no idea what the coin in question is worth as I don't collect errors. I suggest you take illini's advice and search recent auctions.
