whats a 1921 peace worth, and what grade is it. it is a MS coin thats how i bought it. brilliant uncirculated out of texas
thank you, its also the vam 1-0 heavy die clash mark under the eagles beek the line you see under beek is not part of the ray line its the clash
I have not seen a whole lot of the 21s but that is one of the nicest I have seen, at least from the picture, most that I have seen seem to have a more wear and the higher relief does not seem so pronounced as it is in your photoI would say ms 63 300$
IMO, it looks like an AU coin. I believe there is wear on the hair extending onto the cheek. I've seen more hair detail there on other, non-high relief peace $s. It's a beautiful coin but I think it's a slider. Bruce
Maybe it is just me, but I am seeing wear? I don't know a whole lot about high relief peace dollars, but if somebody could explain to me how this coin is a low mint state example, or even show me other examples of mint state coins that are graded that look like this it would help. At the moment I am saying AU.
As a rule, 1921 Peace Dollars are more softly struck than most other issues in the series. So you can't fairly compare the details you mentioned to other dates, in trying to determine if this one uncirculated or not. And in fact, from the images, it looks to be uncirculated. For example, below is a PCGS MS64, and many I have seen are quite a bit weaker than it:
Thank you for that clarification. Helps a lot. I would say to accurately grade the coin in question, better photos will be needed. The coin's color in both photos is different, and I doubt that is the real color. I suggest putting a white piece of paper behind the coin, and make sure your white balance is set right. Also try to capture some of the luster, that is remaining if any.
the 1921 was the frist year for the peace dollar is of high relief design. they were struck during the last three days of 1921.because of the high relief and rushed production, most coins of this date show a weak strike with detail lacking in the hair over the ear on the obverse and lack of detail on the wing feathers over the eagles right leg on reverse. this lackof high point detail should not be mistaken for coin wearhowever. a slightly circulated coin will show wear on he cheek and upper parts of the eagles wing. sliders are common for this date and a coin should always be carefully examined to determine if any wear exists. tilt the coin under a strong light to see if grayish areas or hairlines exist on the cheeks and eagle or inthe fields. its availability from the grading services in ms64-66 is just slightly under median. that is, it is neither very common nor very scare in these grades compared with other peace dollars. one minor variety shows slight doubling of peace, which the one im showing here does. it is a ms coin
Okay, now that you wrote that very long response, how about getting some better pictures of the coin, that shows all the hits, and the true color, making it easier to grade
the frist two pictures is what the coin looks like, but heres pictures set at black and white. i did take it to a coin dealer and he said he never seen one that nice with the strike.
Mark's coin is quite exceptional, and no one should have trouble determining that it is a nice MS, but if you compare the top of the eagles shoulder with that of the original coin, it makes me think it will come back as AU-58. Also as Bruce says, there is appearance of slight wear. But, photos are hard or impossible to determine the difference between 58/63. Jim
The pictured coin is a little above average for strike/detail. See "A Guide Book of Peace Dollars" for more information and a comparison. The dealer mentioned must have been in business for a week or less?
Those pictures show the true color of the coin much better. I would say that with the info given, and the pictures that a mint state 62 isn't that far fetched.
the dealer has been in the coins for over 30 years, and is good friends with the hallenbeck coin gallery in colorado springs. which im sure theres some on this site who know them. i used to be able to put big pictures up but now it says thumbnail picture so i have a setting changed on something.
'21 is on my "to do" list. I want one soooo bad.. I've seen 'em listed at Paul Sims for between $190-$220 but I seriously doubt they're "BU" as he advertises. Probably more like "AU". I'm going to say your's is a MS-60. Nice coin....
I will say that the 21 Peace is a favorite of mine. 1,006,473 from Dec 26 to the end of the year is an impressive number for 1921 production. The high relief and general story behind it is also cool, and to me signifies the rise of the USA as a world leader. I have 2 of them, both AU and 1 is one of the only 3 certified dollar coins I own. The other is not certified, and is a bit nicer IMO. Just not really into the certified.
