Did you not see/look at the images I posted of a VF 30 example? if so, did you not detect a noticeable difference in details/wear between it and the coin which is the subject of this thread?
compared to Marks photo of a VF , THE OPS coin is at least 15 to 20 points higher . I'll buy all the Barbers you have that look like the ops for $8 . rzage
Don't let the shine fool ya, here is a true BU Barber, Comparing these you could see how worn it really is!
There's quite a bit of difference in a high MS coin and a EXF/AU coin . How much over $8 did you pay for your coin ? BTW very nice coin . rzage:thumb:
To me, it looks to have AU details and heavily polished. I personally wouldn't want it in my colleciton because of that. Even with that said, I think you did just fine at $10, and could easily be worth $15 or $20 imo.:hail:
My example was meant to point out the extent of the wear, Half of liberty is gone, almost all of the hairlines gone, the berries (or olives) in the branches over the ears not there. On further thought, I will suspect it is defiantly an forgery considering the wear, but the fields and the rims are totally unblemished!.
Thank you for that exquisite example and your post. It explains what I was seeing, or actually not seeing, in the e-bay photos.
Lack of obvious blemishes doesn't say anything about it being a counterfeit (I assure you, it's not). That could easily be due to the imaging/lighting. Look at the reverse too - it has just about full details and based on that, part of what looks to be wear on the obverse is probably merely softness in strike.
I also like the sellers return policy 100% money back if returned in a week. How would I be able to tell if it is cleaned when i get it. I am a noob at this sorry
I am almost certain it has been cleaned by the look of it. It is extremely white and I don't see any evidence of luster and the devices look polished. At best I would say it has been overdipped. The redbook lists a problem free AU for $75, though in this economy, that coin would probably go for only $50 or so. Cleaning reduces the value significantly, but should still be worth more than you paid. I would keep it regardless.
Initially, I thought it was cleaned (and maybe it is), however if you look at the seller's other listings, they all have a dull, battleship grey look to them (even the BU Franklins). "High Grade" means they're listing it as less than MS-60 Decent rating, plenty of sales, good return policy...probably just bad pictures. I think you may have an AU coin ($75.00) for $7.61. Worst case scenario...you send it back and you're out the postage.
Sicnic, its a very nice coin, that you purchased in my opine. Its the end of the series and I would rate it MS-45. You got a good buy. Traci
Would it be worth sending it to NGC or PCGS to get graded if for nothing just to see if the coins they sell are cleaned?
No, I would not suggest that. Best case scenario this coin is an AU, and the value wouldn't even cover the cost to get it graded, shipping, joining, etc... Post pics of the coin when you get it, and we will give the best opinion on the coin, being cleaned, and what the grade might be
Yes, if you send it to sayPCGS or NGC, they would probably just send it back because they would suspect a "cleaning" job as well. If you suspect it is cleaned and want to "old" it up I would suggest an alternative that has worked recently for me. "Oh well! We all have learned from our novice coin collecting mistakes! You might try soaking it in Virgin Olive Oil for a few weeks and use a green Rose Thorn to see if the remaing corrosion will come off. Also, the Virgin Olive Oil might just tone down that cleaned look somewhat! After that, dip it into some warm soapy water, rinse thoroughly, pat dry in a soft towel then set on a window sill for awhile...making sure to check on it at least once a week and see how it comes out. In any event, with that amount of Die Clashing, the coin is still worth a fairly nice premium even it was cleaned!" Ignoring all the other points in between, soak it in the oil, then wash it. I set mine in the window sill for a week and half and was ver happy with the results. I live in Michigan, so the humidity right now was the perfect environment to "old" it back up
And in addition to that, which I agree with, that wouldn't necessarily tell you anything about other coins they sell.
