US Mint Kiosk at Union Station (Wash DC)

As I noted in another thread: After working in DC for 30+ years, I learned for the first time (yesterday, in another thread) that the US Mint has a kiosk at Union Station (a 5 minute walk from where I work!!).

A few folks ask me some question about it, so I figured I'd start another thread.

My own observations: it seems they have most of the cheaper stuff (this morning, every item they had there sold for under $50). Same prices as usmint.gov *except* (of course) no postage fees (and no waiting, and no dealing with Pitney Bowes or whoever).

They did have a UHR (and two other gold coins) on display -- but the guy behind the counter said you had to order them on-line.

Quite curiously: they had Mint Rolls of WH Harrison Dollars (I picked up a few) which I see are listed on the website as sold out. They also had a P&D Mint Roll of the Puerto Rico Quarter, and I picked up one set (noting that everyone else has to wait for their orders to come through -- I now have one in-hand).

I didn't write down everything they had, but among the offerings were:
- 2009 P&D Kenney Half Rolls Set
- 2009 Sac Dollar Rolls Set
- DC/Territories Quarter Mint Set
- " " Proof Set
- 2009 President Dollar Proof
- 2008 Mint Silver Proof Set

again -- all of this at the same price as on-line (but no waiting, no fuss)

In anwer to some specific questions (the guy behind the counter was an elderly gentle guy, almost frail, I didn't want to press him too hard)

Q: Do you have the Lincoln or Braille commemoratives?
A: No, you have to go to the website for that

Q: How soon after a coin is released does the Kiosk have it?
A: As soon as they send it to us, which is usually 5-7 days. (Then he added), but we don't get the items that are limited, like the Lincoln or Braille (This didn't make complete sense to me, because the proofs are limited, too, right? But I didn't want to press him - maybe he was referring to expensive limited)

Q: Will you have the 2009 Indiana Lincoln Cent?
A: Proabably, that is my understanding (arggh, I forgot to ask if they'd be the expensive special sets, or regular rolls, and/or what day they'd have them)

Pick up some Harrison rolls. The prices are insane on the bay......

 

You're right. It's nuts! (It seems that all you have to do is mention the words "sold out" and people go crazy)

So . . . my first venture into "flipping". I went back this afternoon, picked up a couple, and put them on "the bay" . . . . 3 day auctions . . . I'll know by Sunday night whether that was a good move, and, if so, I'll snap up more on Monday.

 

I can't wait to here what happens!!! I have never had luck flipping stuff. I was always the guy who usually lost money when trying to do something like this. I will just leave this stuff to other people and celebrate in their success. :thumb:

 

Me, too. I mean, not that I've ever tried flipping anything, but it seems that nothing I've ever purchased has ever appreciated enough to flip (and/or I've overpaid for it). I did try flipping two items once, and (this is the truth) after taking all expenses into account -- I netted exactly $0.08! Clearly not with the few hours I put into it. (But I learned how do do things via Auctiva).

But, for this, I'm like pinching myself. I'm looking at completed sales, and Harrison $1 rolls -- if mint wrapped -- have been selling (in the last 48 hours) for around $100 each! I don't understand why, and it's hard to see why it would continue (but, otoh, why would it not continue). I've never lucked into something like this before.

Well, I ain't countin' any chickens before they hatch, but, everyone else's Harrison eggs sure seem to be doing fine!

I have been visiting Union Station quite frequently lately and have yet to see this kiosk. Where is it located. I normally enter by the doors next to Phantom Comics coming from the capitol.

 

It's on the far east side of the "main hall" -- close to the doors that lead closer towards the trains. (I think the Comics place is on the west side of the station) I hope that helps.

Let me know if it doesn't help, and I'll try to get better directions tomorrow.

I went back this morning (hint: my experiment of selling Harrison's on eBay looks like it's going very well).

It's on the opposite end of the hall from Fantom Comics. And, even more precisely: it's #267 on the Big Maps at Union Station.

I have more news about the Kiosk . . . going to start another thread on it.

If you mean things like the proof sets then the answer is no. As a rule they do not set limits on the mintages of those things and the only limit is the number of sets ordered by the day they decide to end sales. Now the proof bullion coins do sometimes have set limits, and the commemoratives have set limits, but not the annual proof and mint sets.

 

I may be going today and I am about to leave so could someone let me know if it's open today?

 

The stated hours are 12noon to 6pm on Sundays.

Aug 13th Lincoln cent exchange

I went to the US Mint Kiosk at Union Station this past Thursday for the cent exchange (3rd in the series) during my lunch hour. It took me about a half hour to exchange for my six rolls. Not too long. The only bummer was that two of my rolls showed lincoln's head on both ends (not the new design). I asked the clerk if I could exchange them, but she understandably said that they didn't have time. All and all, it was a pretty efficient distribution. I went back on Friday and the clerk told me they had exchanged 4,000 rolls.
