I'm new to collecting coins, I'm not sure but all my other Morgans only have 7 feathers. Can someone please give some input.
As far as I know, the 1878 had 7/8 and 8 tail feathers. 1879 and after had 7 http://vamworld.com/wiki/1878-P_VAMs
Wait it does have 8 tail feathers darn eyes I look more than once and still saw 7,illusions .It still doesn't look right can you weigh it.
Ok that's what I thought. I'll weigh it tomorrow at work. I really don't understand people who make fakes to rip people off.
It certainly is suspicious. I think it's fake based off of the obverse strike. Maybe I'm wrong, im not a morgan expert although I wish I was. E PLU looks suspect. I'm sure there are other fakes made with the same fake dies
Some of the fakes are made with old British 50% silver coins melted down. The weight reveals them, sometimes.
And if a melt down coin was used, he might want to check for the right diameter (1.5 inches). It might draw in a bit when it was cooled.
Pitting, strange patina, wire rim, weakness in random areas. This is a somewhat higher quality counterfeit compared to others I've seen. They did a pretty good job with the date. Sorry to say.
