This is not my coin, but I am tempted. I took this pic at my lcs through the case then enlarged it. Would this coin grade ms? The lighting is terrible in pic. In hand the coin looks red brown. I can get it for vf price. Thanks for looking
Providing that the reverse is the same condition, I will give it an AU condition . So, your getting a deal . What's he asking if you don't mind me asking ?
Although it's difficult to grade from photos it might be a little easier if you posted clear pics of both sides, properly oriented. Thank you.
Although the photos are not great, based on what I perceive to be wear on the brow, lower rear truncation and outer bun in the hair, I would go with AU-58.
This coin is priced at a au53 level. I looked at the wrong year. I still like it and think that it’s a beautiful coin.
I think you got a slight deal if this link with values is correct . Also, NGC says $220 . 1854 US half cent value, Braided Hair (allcoinvalues.com)
It might be a “slider” (AU58), but then again, MS might not be out of the question, given that it does appear to be traces of original mint red on there. The single-side, sideways picture is of course less than ideal for making any definitive determination. But from what can be seen, it looks pretty nice to me.
Since the VF price is about half of the AU price, according to the Grey Sheet, it looks like you can’t get hurt. HOWEVER, as the others have said, every coin has two sides. The obverse is more important in determining the grade and value, but a problem reverse can ruin the whole thing. Long ago I bought an 1854 half cent from Gimbels Department Store that they graded and priced as a VF. Today it’s in an MS-62 NGC holder.
Here is the piece I bought as a "VF" in the 1960s. The trouble was, these coins did not sell well even back then. So the grading them easy to make them appear to be cheap so that they would sell.
Thanks for all the replies. This coin will probably come home with me soon. I will post better pics. I don’t have a braided hair half cent so this will be a good one to fill a hole in my type set.
Well, that’s true. Rim nicks, and especially filed edges can really sneak up on you. Some people use certain types of holders to hide them.
