1x 100oz of Silver*bullion bar* - $1,580 10x 1oz Silver Eagles - $174 1x 4oz $100 Looking Silver bar -$89.00 1x 1923 MS 65 Peace Dollar(NGC) - $119.99 1x 1882-CC MS 63 Morgan(NGC) - $199.99 I just bought this the other day from APMEX. What would you add to this, and do you think this is a good starting point for value appreciation for a coin investor for say 10-15 years from now?
I would buy some every week or month, every month. Some gold or platinum wouldn't hurt either. Dropping a bomb wad of cash all at once like that can blow up in your face. I also think you got peeled on the $100 looking bar if it is only one ounce but that is JMO. BTW Welcome to Cointalk!
Welcome. I think you could get an answer to the coin question if you post some pics for obvious reasons. While you're at it you could post pics of the bullion at the same time.
You know, for being new to this, I should have looked at the mintage over in the red book on the 1923 ms 65 peace dollar. However, for the condition it's in, I still believe I paid a good price. Maybe I can flip it.
The best rule I've learned is to buy what you like... it's your collection not ours! If it were me, I'd be buying high grade Barber quarters and halves, but those aren't for everyone. If you like silver, which it seems, maybe buying up some 90% junk silver lots would be fun. Right now they go for about 10.5-11.5x face value or so. Can get some really fun coins in those, pull out the nicer coins for your coin collection and keep the rest and/or trade for other lots of junk silver which you can sort through. Cheap way to fill up some albums of the coins no longer in circulation while you're investing in silver.
TheNoost, not the best. About 90 all together, as expected for this big lump of silver. illini, I agree with your statement however from how I see it, I am leaving the value aspect to you guys, the experts to judge whether in your eyes this was a good buy for the value and long term appreciation.
Sounds like you got a pretty good deal on the Morgan and Peace dollar. The bullion prices seem a little high but not by too much. Overall I think you did pretty good.
Yeah, shame on me for being an eager beaver on the bullion. I got in when the market touched the 15.00 high yesterday. bleh. If I only ordered it today I woulda paid $30 less. It's Johnson Matthey. The bullion is going to be a very long term hold, like 30+ year.
I know this might sound silly, guys, but on a scale of 1-10, 10 being the best you've ever seen, how would you grade my first big order for coin/bullion longterm investing purposes?
You speaking about the $100 bill bar. I've looked at those so many times and passed. Now that they are out I'm kicking myself for not pulling the pin.....
Well, not sure about the two dollar coins as I really don't collect those, but from what I can see those are both fairly common dates so I wouldn't expect an major appreciation in the short run. In the long term, you'll ride up and down w/ the coin market in general most likely. For the bullion you paid $1843 for 114 oz. of silver. That's $16.17 per ounce or around $1.00 to $1.50 over melt value per ounce depending on which day you purchased it. If you had to sell today, you'd be losing money on the bars, but would probably be ok on the Eagles as they trade for a slight premium usually. If your motivation is just buying for silver value, i'd focus on buying as close to silver values as you can. With 90% junk silver you can pretty much buy it at spot value if you look enough. Can do the same with bars if you hunt. But if you really like Eagles, then buy those as well since you'll likely get a premium back when selling, but probably not as much as you paid. I agree with the others though, don't put all your eggs in one basket. Some silver is good and some coins are good too, just don't load up too heavily in one area and you'll have less exposure to trouble. Some too would be even better I think.
What really matters is that you are happy. Nobody really knows what will go on with silver and you bought when you bought, so who knows. Just wait until you get them in you "gloved" hand, you will be hooked. It is about as addicting as it gets. Then you will go back to their and others websites and drool until you save the cash to do something like that again. I will tell you something that an old New Yorker once told me and that is "You can never go wrong buying nice things from the US mint". That has held true for many years and I doubt it will change any time soon.
Nope, the op had it listed as a 1888 CC (not 1882) just a typo, but he changed it right as I wrote my post.
