Hey everyone, I went to the bank today and got a bunch of rolls for the first time in a while and found this in the first roll of FED wrapped nickels. It really stood out as the obverse is in very nice shape with light wear and good luster - I was suprised to find that it was a D mint which was very filled in looking and refered to my redbook but don't have any other good references. The back is somewhat more worn so it is hard to tell if someone just tried to fake it or if it has just worn down. I would stab a guess and say the coin may grade a F-VF but seems to have to much wear on the rear to grade much better. Whaddayathink? THANKS! J
Wow is this an obtical illusion or is that an S very tricky one to determine or not I would go with the filled mm. JC
Filled MM. You really should pick up some references to see the actual coins. I am not saying that we don't want to help, but, it is far easier for you if you own a Cherrypicker's Guide or books on RPM's for your own research. That is why I buy just about any book that I don't already own.
Filled MM, the rev. is always a good indicator of nickels for grading. That is why everyone always grades them by the "full step" method. It is still a good coin for it's age, and has a nice luster.
1955-D Variety: Over Mint Mark PUP MM URS-13 . I-4.L-4 Description A D MM was punched over an S mm . The top curve of the S is visible slightly to the N of the D. Occured as production ceased in SF & remaining dies were repunched in Phil. There are 10 different D/S Varieties for the 55 strongest (OMM-001) others bring less MS-60 $38. MS-63 $60 MS-65 $95 FS-05-1955D-501 (034) For my guess I see an S over a filled D As there being ten different D/S Varieties I say you got a keeper. I send it into a TPG....being a modern coin what will it cost you $12 to grade? You'll still have a 55 D/S and a nice addition to your collection. Hope this helps. Paddy
Paddy54 - this helps a bunch!! I recently joined NGC and think I will send it in as it is a very nice coin. I really appreciate you posting this information as I just can't afford to go out and buy every variety book out there, although I wish I could! :kewl:
JJK78, I'm glad I could be of some help. It is a filled MM but I do believe from the last picture posted that it is a D/S. My cherrypicker's guide only list the one variety in a picture. However it does say there are at least 10! As for buying all the books I do know the cost of good reference books on coins.I think I have them all. LOL well close anyway.I would grade it....in fact I myself would buy it as a varitey for my Jefferson collection...even thro it was not a high grade..just to have one to show. Good luck and PM me or post a reply as to what happens I really like to know. Regards Paddy
I go with the Frank Duo and say filled also. I find it hard to believe the over mint mark would not have more relief for the S, and be in the exact placement with out any side deviation. I will be interested in what comes forth. Interesting coin. Jim
I think that based upon the last 2 pictures that it could be some form of D/S. I don't usually imagine that something looks like something else If I were looking at these pictures without even knowing what the question was, I would lean toward a D/S possibility. Thanks, Bill
