Older past three years I have slowed down collecting so I can work on building my family strengthen my self... Has anybody found that being a collector getting boring in certain aspects the mints producing smaller numbers of coins that are rarer, we're basically becoming like Canada with our coins they produce small numbers of coins for special events and then they got millions different little special events that go on every single time.... I mean it's this the route we're going?..

Like for instance the message for the 20/20 West point mint world war II silver eagles was 75,000 each one of those went for $83 a coin if you were lucky to get them, the next up was there West appointment metals which have an unlimited mintage for the year.

Not an unusual feeling at all. I would be more surprised if a hobbyist did not have the feeling at one time or another. That would be a rare event, in my opinion. I have been through the up and down boring cycle many times over the years. I seem to come back with a heightened interest. Then again, I do not concentrate to much on value aspects of the hobby, and I have never given any thought to the U.S. Mint collector $ manipulations. This is a part of the U.S. Mint culture, now.

I gave up on the US Mint about 2 years ago. As the USPS started making wallpaper, the US Mint started making ballast. After 1999 you had to buy so many quarters, most at a premium, to keep the series going. And, they weren't satisfied with commemoratives or ASE's, they had to make them in several grades and finishes. And, they have to make them very difficult for a collector to get. And, dealers get so many before they are even released to the public.

Yes, the US Mint is getting more like the Franklin Mint every day. I have been buying from the US Mint since 1959 and I am done.

I understand your feelings but to me, forget the US Mint and current issues. There's a world of coins to be collected and US coins go back a couple of hundred years. Before that there's Colonial Coins. You can have all the fun you desire if you forget current coins.

I've been on and off collecting for the past 18 years. I got bored of collecting and now I'm back again.

I think that rather, the issue of being a completest vis-a-vis too wide a focus is at play here... Try to either find joy in the things you like without wanting 1 of each, or alternatively, narrowing down the set that you have to complete. I myself find that I get bored looking at the same set for too long, and as such, I have fairly narrow collecting interests in coins, notes, stamps and medals... my focus tends to alternate between those, and as they are focused, I can make incremental progress each time my spirits are up regarding a particular field :)

I get tired of a certain series after a while. I simply pivot to another. I just showed someone at work interested in history my paper money I have bought the last few years. Yeah, I kind of wasted a bit on those, (8 franklin notes, etc). But, it was fun and for whatever reason I was bored with coins at the time.

My advice? Look around with fresh eyes and see if another series appeals to you for whatever reason. Broaden your horizon. I bet you that you will like your US coins more in a while after you have "strayed".

All great observations and comments. My US collection is missing only the few that are virtually impossible for a middleclass American retiree. So, I decided to go after ancients. And, dropped the modern stuff. I still watch for those I don't have. But, I am not going to go after any new US stuff. It costs too much and the return on investment is negative, very negative.

I'm with the Inspector. Recently I have been going through my Krause catalogs and looking for something different, not too expensive, while also working at my classic U.S. series. There are so many foreign series to choose from that will not break anyone's bank or wallet. I might start with South Africa and build my own DANSCO. But then again, I love my gardens and good weather and metal/bottle detecting are right around the corner.

I've come to terms with the fact I am not a completionist. I like to hop around, I have a few projects I focus on at a time, but you'll never genuinely have "one-of-everything"

especially with the manufactured rarities. Collect every business strike? That would include the ATB S mint marks.

I've collected for over 50 years and my interest comes and goes. I do really like the whole silver eagle series but so much of what the mint is producing now is just overpriced trinkets. I've steered myself away from the latest and greatest and gotten back into completing my Washington quarter collection in uncirculated grades. Pick a new direction and go with it.

I love Colonial Coins after finding my first Large Cent and King George Copper Metal Detecting .I would rather have a whole collection of them than this over priced New stuff .

I started out in the 40's as a collector of circulation grade coins. At least coins I found in circulation. A lot of them were very high grade AU's. As time went on and there were fewer and fewer holes to fill and the US Mint kept me busy by putting new coins out there every year. That's great. So, I kept filling those holes. All of a sudden there were more coins being made than the average collector had holes for. You needed a State Quarter album, an ASE album, then an ATB album. Then you had to put a hole in there for the "circulation grade" S mint quarters. Along came reverse proof and other variations.

Nearing the octogenarian designation I quit new stuff and went to old stuff - Ancients. Fortunately they aren't minting any new ancients. I can never fill an album or complete a series. It is genuinely a WYSIWYG hobby.

Everyone gets bored every now and then, especially if you're set collecting. Up until somewhat recently the US mint was an absolute snoozefest and it's nice they finally started to add excitement again. If you get bored with what you're doing look around, check out word coins or a different series, just get what you like and dont feel the need to do a full set, or even just take a break for a bit. It's supposed to be fun not a chore

If your knee gets well enough to motivate with a support brace, partner up with someone and don't overdue an excursion. I need to take a 2 mile round trip into the woods this year to see an old sawmill and copper mine and am taking my son along to keep an eye on me. If I find one old bottle or horse shoe I know I will over do it, so a partner helps. I'm wearing my knee brace to a couple of old sites that I know are a bit hard to get to but I'll be danged if I let it get in my way.

I'm bone on bone on the inside of my left knee. Pain is 24/7 and has gotten worse over the winter months. Surgery was cancelled in early January due to the virus but is rescheduled for June. I'll just have to wait and see if that happens.

Patello/Femoral Syndrome it sounds like. The same on my right knee. It's no fun for sure. I do have to pace myself. The cartilage is paper thin now but still some of it left. I do hope you get some relief after the surgery. Just never give in no matter what.

I hear that. My right knee is all metal, has been for 10 years I think. I just need a partial replacement so hopefully that will be better. No cartilage left. I think I worn my knees out before I was 30. Too much running, biking and hiking. Can't do any of that now. I should have listened to my mother. Lol
