Please GTG of the 1942-D Jefferson Nickel shown below. I have attached a poll for you to cast your vote and you may select up to 3 different things: the numerical grade, 5FS or 6FS or Not FS, and the + designation. As always, comments welcome, and please remember to vote in the poll.
I‘d say MS66 5FS (after having looked at it for about 3 seconds lol). There’s a hit (?) above the I in Monticello which could prevent an FS designation though.
I am shooting the moon at this one. The reverse is beautifully struck, which isn’t that common for that date. MS 67, 5FS. I debated about a + designation, because of the strike quality.
I thought the mint mark was different on the war nickels? Isn't it supposed to be above Monticello? Or is yours not a part-silver one?
MS 66 6FS ...I debated 66 vs 67 but went conservative with 66 (it's clean but I was slightly worried about it missing the needed luster for a 67)...the steps seem as clear of a case as I've seen in a while for all 6
The silver war nickels have the mint mark above Monticello. 1942 had both silver and non-silver (for which the mint mark is on the obverse for Denver and not present at all for Philadelphia).
1942 had non silver Nickels like the Op's and silver War Nickel with the larger mintmark above the dome.
Easy 66 FS. Just a slight ding to the 6th step but not enough to hurt the designation. I think that the little bit of unstruck planchet roughness holds this one back. Nice!
66+ 6FS I feel like the dark spot on the obverse kept it from 67. If they were not bothered by the spot and gave it 67 I wouldn’t be mad. I think it could go either way. Hopefully you got the 67 6FS
