Looking for something in my unsorted silver coins today, I wondered which unpackaged silver might be worth setting aside in a flip. Most (but not all) of these were bought at close to melt between ~1995-2000. None are packaged, so I don't know the exact purchase prices or dates. Thanks for any advice. I can take individual photos of both sides on any if suggested.
I'd put it all in flips, so you can note the silver weights (ASW) and other pertinent information. Looks like a neat lot.
Exactly. And by keeping track of the bullion content (ASW) of each coin, it makes it easier to tally up your holdings for silver stacking purposes, in a spreadsheet or whatever. Then calculating the total bullion value of your stash becomes easier, whether just for record keeping or when it’s time to sell.
There are some fairly valuable items in that lot. First ones that got my attention are the trade dollar and Russian rubles. Not sure if this is a match, but it might be. I just purchased a 1897 graded F and it was way above melt.
Agreed. I'd put all of those in flips (for my binders) and likely the half crown sized coins too (30mm+ diameter). The small(er) diameter coins would be evaluated for 'scarcity'/rarity' and/or condition and put in flips accordingly for the long term hold collection.
I can't be positive, but some of your coins have a greenish tint that may indicate PVC residue. You may want to check and give them a short acetone soak if needed before putting them in new flips FWIW: I would put all of them in a flip or 2x2
They've always been loose since I got them, but maybe some of them were in PVC flips before that. I'm no longer a working chemist, so I can't "borrow" acetone from lab any more. Any recommendations as to a good place to get some that will leave minimum residues? BTW, these were never one "lot", I just picked out the most promising of the junk or unpackaged silver I got from about 4 shops over a several year period.
