I bought a roll of uncirculated 2007 Jeffersons that the teller happened to have today. They are in the N F String and Son, Inc. roll, but I do not know which mint. Is there some way to find out without breaking it open? They also had a Tyler in the same packaging, I bought that also. Anybody have any ideas.
You can only guess based on location relative to the mint and even then it's just a guess. The only way I know of is to break it open. Even the ones you can buy at face value with free shipping from the mint you have to break open.
There's also a small chance that you'll never know which mint they are from if you have a full roll of Missing Edge Lettering coins like this one that I have: Of course, even if you have just one of those you've scored big time as they are worth quite a bit. Silly to put the date and mintmark on the edge I think, makes putting them in albums much less fun.
Rolls issued from the mint generally command a higher price than those obtained from your local bank....
I understand that, but this is exaclty what these 2 rolls look like (without the giant coin superimposed). https://www.apmex.com/Product/53106/2009_D_John_Tyler_Presidential_Dollar___25_Coin_Roll.aspx
I don't know if the Tyler has any premium mainly because at one point you could get them at the mint for face value and no shipping here: http://catalog.usmint.gov/webapp/wc...storeId=10001&catalogId=10001&identifier=8100
That's bank wrapped as oppossed to this.... http://catalog.usmint.gov/webapp/wc...ctId=14206&langId=-1&parent_category_rn=17238
Ok, thanks for all the help. I think I am just going to seal them up and put them in my safe with all the other stuff I have in there for a rainy day, or week or year...
Thanks for the info, I see now they are in 2 different locations on their website and have different costs. Thanks for the help.
That's the circulating coins program. It's wrapped differently than the individual rolls issed by the mint. Compare the two packagings...
I don't want to cause too much thread drift here, but being a new collector I have a question about buying rolls like this. My bank said they had rolls of the Tyler dollars in. Should I get a roll or 2 to put back as an investment. Do rolls like these tend to go up in value in a few years? I know there are so many ways to collect coins. I am just so green that I don't know if this was a good opportunity that I passed on or just something I should have bought if collecting rolls was my thing? Thanks Randy
Personally I would not hold these for investment because the mintage is so high and I see no gain in the long run. There are a lot of undervalued stocks at the moment that would give a much higher return. For me the only reason to get rolls of these is to look for the highest quality ones for the collector albums and then spend the rest.
I've ordered two rolls (P&D) from the mint since the inception of the program. I really don't know what I was thinking....I'm really not a "roll collector" but now I've started something and feel I need to now complete it. It'll probably never amount in value to anything over face but what the heck? Know what too? The storage box is getting real heavy....
Just to follow up I broke open the roll of Jeffersons and took a good look at them. the 2 that were at the ends of the roll are a little beat up and the other 23 are awesome. I think I am going to give them to my grand neices and nephews as a gift. Since the oldest one is 16 and the youngest are under 1 if they keep them until they are my age and in good condition they might have something. Now if they keep them and give them to their kids then there might be some value there. I have a kid and she is going to get an awesome collection of ungraded dollars that I have started on about a month ago.
