whatever happened here, i dont see how it could happen post mint. any opinions on what it may be and what it is from? also some of the letters have missing or thin details. thank you
Looks like damage on the rim it could be a MAD e.t.c can we get full pictures of the obverse and reverse.
The thinning of the devices closest to the rim is probably due to die attrition and polishing as the die ages. The damage to the rim may be due to a damaged collar during the coining process.
if it were a MAD, it would be effected from start to finish or point to point. it would not leave an untouched area like that
usually when i see finning, the rim is normal and has that thin edge raised up above. the outer rim here is the same elevation of the normal rim. i dont know if that entirely matters though. i am not as familiar with finning as i am other things. i dont know if that helps? just to be clear i am not questioning you, just trying to further my knowledge. thank you.
I understand. I see this kind of damage regular enough and that while finning is raised, initially anyway, it can be folded, flattened and worn away with time. My first inclination was a rim/collar clash and the subject witness marks. But the 9-12 o'clock looks like a bit of finning. Could be a couple of things are going on with that coin, so they are blending some of the effects.
