Yes, and we see how well that worked out. An MS 67 and 67+ regraded to both MS67... 99 times out of 100 you’re looking at negligible changes and additional costs for different plastic.

Crossovers are a fool’s errand.

 

Can we see pics of your coins. What grade did they used to have MS68 ? or did they go down to 66 ? Congrats on having cheerios dollars. I got a cheerios cent in the cereal box. I think I gave it to someone or still have it. I will search for it after work tonight.

 

Fascinating thread. One thing that I thought...used to be and may have changed...that crossovers had to grade same or higher, or the TPG doing the c-o either wouldn't holder it at lower grade or the submitter was first notified for approval, or had to specify approval on the form, etc.

Another thing, there was a time...and I know things change and haven't kept up with it all...that PCGS seemed to be regarded as THE top TPG, bar none, and the vast majority of their listed values (by them, of course) for most coins were the highest. I've noticed now that many (more) NCG values seem higher than PCGS and the NGC reputation either rivals or exceeds that of PCGS. Maybe this is only or more for certain coins/varieties...I don't know...and maybe this all swings back/forth every few years. I do know that when I was getting coins graded some years ago (early-mid-2000s), I went from PCGS to NGC for reasons of holder designs and customer service/courtesy and image (long story).

 

It just depends on the submitter. You can have it cross at any grade, or specify to only cross it at the same grade or higher. You can't request only a higher grade though.

In most cases if you're going to do a cross at any grade it's better to just crack the coin out and submit it raw so they don't have to grade it through the plastic.

That's still the case for US coins and if anything the gap has widened in recent years.

The price guides they publish really don't mean much. It's up to them to try and keep it accurate and it can also be used with higher prices to push perception.

All that said, you will find much more favorable NGC opinions on this forum and many who despise PCGS on this forum as well. This is unique to this forum and opinions that aren't reflected in the wider market.

Great Collections doesn't release their newer sales to there as they want you to go to their site to see the prices, but many of the other auction houses do where you can see the price differences for yourself

 

Thanks for the advice on returning the labels to get the coins removed. I will give that a try.
