In Dec. 2017, I sent two NGC graded "2000 P $1 PROTOTYPE REVERSE" dollars to PCGS for crossover grading as I desired all coins to be in PCGS slabs. In 2018, I emailed NGC and informed them of the crossover to PCGS and neither heard from them nor observed a drop of the coins from their site. Today I rechecked the original NGC numbers, 4466633-011 MS 67 and 3836841-002 MS 67+. Both are still listed on NGCCOINS.COM This of course, causes a potential population error. If you know of a better place to post info on crossovers and population corrections, please reply. By the way, PCGS graded each crossover as a MS67 and both were designated as 2000-P SAC$1 "Cheerios" DOLLAR. No original packaging was sent, only the NGC slabs. Of course I disappointed at the drop in grading. Lesson learned.
I suspect there have been more undocumented cross-overs that just these two coins. Personally, I prefer the somewhat stricter NGC grading standards to those of PCGS...especially as they pertain to strike quality (FSB, FBL, FH, etc).
None of them care about an email, anyone can email and say anything they want trying to get a coin removed from the population. The only way to get a coin removed from the population is to send them the label after the crossover. That’s the only way they can confirm the coin is no longer in their holder
While many on this forum will agree with you, collecting and the market as a whole only a small percentage would agree with that statement
Overall, Yes If collecting as a whole or the market believed that PCGS wouldn’t bring the strongest prices.
I don’t get crossovers. If you need a specific brand of plastic, buy your coins in that brand of plastic. My unsolicited 2 cents.
Whenever I have the choice between two coins of the same grade, one from NGC and the other from PCGS (modern slab), I almost always find the NGC coin more appealing.
Curious what the group thinks about the grading standards of the other 2 top 4 TPG’s. Meaning ANACS and ICG. Based on paste postings I’ve read, my impression is that ANACS does a better job with variety’s but not much on ICG other then grades are reliable. Neither offers values on their websites.
That's fine, just be aware you're in the minority. Everyone should collect how they want and get what they want, they should just be aware of how the market views their taste as there will be an impact when it comes time to sell aside from things like common date common grade morgans that basically bring the same price in any holder The price hierarchy basically goes PCGS/CAC > NGC/CAC > PCGS > NGC > ANACS You don't have to have upgrades on crosses to bring a stronger price on coins of value. There actually are many examples you can find where PCGS/CAC basically brings the same price or even exceeds the price of an NGC next grade up Edit: That's for US coins. World coins are much more complicated as it's country specific, some countries PCGS does better others NGC does better and both do substantially better than the lower tier TPGs.
ANACS is good for obscure varieties that the first tier (PCGS>NGC) won't do and for lower value coins on their specials that would be cost prohibitive to send to PCGS or NGC. They're also good for the Dan Carr overstikes as PCGS and NGC won't do those but will do his designs
I think that NGC wants the old label back in order to remove the coin but that's not possible unless PCGS returns the label. NGC can't just take someones word that a coin is no longer in their holder.
Duh, why would you want to cross over in the first place? NGC 67 is pretty darn exceptional... In my opinion
This is just a guess, but they probably wait until they've accumulated a substantial number before they return the inserts.
The TPGs? They send them back to the customer when their submission is returned. It's up to the customer to then send them to the TPG to get the coin(s) removed from the population. Youre supposed to get like a 50 cent credit on your account when you do so, but that credit has never shown up for me anytime I have done it.
