Looking at a American Samoa 2009 D. Is this mark on the drum leg a chip that stayed on the quarter? It appears to me that the "chunk" is just up from the "divot". Any suggestions? Thanks

    American Samoa Errors

Opened American Samoa rolls from the mint today and found some interesting faults. Two coins appear like they never got washed. (Attachment #3) There is no luster to them. Several coins have weird looking "E"s in "IN GOD WE TRUST" like the die never fully seated on that side of the coin (Attachment #2). The 3rd coin pictured here looks like a double die in the "U" (Attachment #2).

Here are some more pictures of what I was talking about. No luster, obverse & reverse comparison. I don't know the correct terminology for these errors. The other ones posted here today hopefully shows the lack of sharpness and depth of the die into the disks. There is definately something amiss here in these rolls but, again, terminology escapes me! HELP!!!!!!

The top coin looks like it was damaged by the reeding of another coin coming in contact with that one. We call them contact marks or in the "old" days....bag marks.

The darkened quarter may have been improperly annealed and that could actually be an error.

    Thanks,
    Bill

Finally! Someone read my input and commented! Thanks Bill! I can buy off on "bag marks but take a closer look at the last picture. From the "C" in America to the "A" in Dollar the letters are almost flat or sort of tapered. The "e" in WE is almost not even there! It's almost like the die was filed down or cocked off center, or maybe not seated right in the clamp. Not a machinest, but there is something very wrong with these coins!

How do I find out if the annealing error is in fact an error? Get it attributed somewhere?

First, there is a sort of slightly incuse ring showing in the areas that you noted which extends inward from the rim about 1 mm or a little over 1 mm. This appears to be the result of Die Distortion either from deterioration of the Die or from the annealing process. Due to the distortion, the Lettering on the Dies became distorted and weak and show as weakness near or along the ring on the coin.

You should send the other coins to Coneca for examination to see if in fact they were improperly annealed.

Really...what happened to to op's coin in question? This got way off base.

No offense but your question really should have been another thread, not piggy backed.

    fishaddict,

You are right! The poster of the other Samoa Quarters should have started a new Thread. This happens a lot on C.T. and not much is usually said. With that said, Bill (foundinrolls) answered the OP's question sufficiently and the answer should suffice!

Thanks all! Really do appreciate the inputs. Sorry for the "piggy back". I'll remember that from now on. Will send annealed coins to Coneca and see what they have to say. As for the distorted coins, can they tell me if those are in fact errors as well or should I send them elsewhere? Thes two rolls are really messed up! Doubt if there are 5 coins in the Denver roll that aren't!
