Woohoo - finally got a 1796 DBC. Ran second it several auctions before winning this one. Fits right in with the rest.
Nice coin. Maybe you should collaborate with the author of the post ""Bumps" on the side of Coronet Large Cents??".
Per Shawn this is clip and not a bump. I tend to agree with him. I will go add a comment on the other post.
Congratulations Mark. I remember how I felt when I acquired my first 1796 DBCs. Those 1796 DBC's are definitely illusive, more so with smooth, non-corroded surfaces like yours. A nice specimen for sure. (S-108?) Now for the next one.............? (You do know there are 3 reverse types for 1796 DBCs)...... That is NOT an edge bump. It is a rim clip as made at the mint at the time the copper was rolled out into coin thickness prior to cutting out the blanks. It does not detract from the value of the coin.
Yep - I will continue to be on the look out for them. If shawn had ended his auctions farther apart I might have had one of the others. After the first couple that I missed I wanted to make darn sure I won one this time.
Looks like a S-108 but if you got it from Shawn, you know that already. I'm also on the prowl for my first 1796 and, of course, a 1799 & 1804. I likes! :eat: Hand it over! Ribbit
Shawn is one of my favorite copper dealers. Many of my coins came from him. Great guy. Prices on his website are a bit strong IMO, but as long as you buy the good coins (or through his auctions as per above), there's no problem. For those of you who really like old copper, I'd suggest you get on his mailing list -- tells you when he gets new coins on his website, and when he has e-bay offerings. http://earlycoppercoins.com
Not that you necessarily want to, but would a major TPG recognize this and grade it given the clip? I'm curious about their practices with clipped coins. Nice coin and a nice dealer. I bought my Fugio from Shawn.
Yes, a TPG should be able to tell the difference between an edge bump and a clipped planchet, and slab the latter and reject the former (provided the edge bump is bad enough).
